The stage is set. Next week we are in for a two hour finale special where everything we know about the ONCE heroes and villains will be turned on its head. This week was busy enough with reunions, two dragon ladies, a blackened heart and Queen Cora’s return to the Enchanted Forest.

ONCE starts to pick up the pace in preparation for the final three episodes of Season Four, which has seen us journey to the Frozen Arendelle, New York, the fairytale ocean and a realm permanently in the 1920s. The relationship between Emma and Lily is renewed in the present day, illustrating the impact of the Author’s meddling.

Victoria Smurfit was fantastically cast as Cruella de Ville, rivalling Glenn Close’s portrayal with ease. This week was her turn to shine as her back story was revealed to include the author, gin and dalmatians. Alongside this, Rumplestiltskin’s plan to change the endings of villains is in motion.

“Sometime having a code is all we have.” This week our patience with the Emma/Snow White/Charming family drama was rewarded with an exciting tale of thieves, wicked witches and Oz. What’s more we got a bit more of Will Scarlett/The Knave of Hearts (finally) and gained a few more pieces of the puzzle surrounding the Author and the time gap since we bid farewell to our Arendelle friends.

The threads are beginning to weave together in this week’s ONCE as Operation Mongoose gathers pace as the villains close in on the Storybook. Lies and past wrongs are exposed, and the writers even throw in a unicorn for good measure. Warning this review contains spoilers outside of the fairytale classics… and a lot of ‘finally’s. by Julia Lawson ONCE is famous for chopping up and reassembling fairytales so that the level of character cross over is akin to a complex game of fairytale story Tetris. In this episode it was Ursula’s turn, enlightening us with a story of mermaids, pirates, sea kings and stolen voices. In Storybrooke the kidnapping interrogation took a turn for the worse as a certain wooden puppet told more lies than his nose could handle… by Julia Lawson Once again, ONCE put a new spin on a classic this week, delving further into Maleficent’s history, reintroducing Aurora and several cases of finger pricking, but also Regina’s early days of villainy. In the Storybrooke present, villainous plans were beginning to be revealed one card and kidnapping at a time… by Julia Lawson ONCE season four part two seems to be gathering momentum. Slowly but surely it is being to weave its new ‘villains’ storyline into Storybrooke’s day-to-day lifestyle. Maleficent joins the proceedings, with a reimagined backstory putting Snow and Charming in the shadows, while Regina’s quest for redemption includes a little wooden puppet, sorry, real boy. by Julia Lawson Well here we are again, letting out a big post-ONCE exhale. The mid-season premiere gave us a refreshing twist – there was no actual curse ruining everyone’s lives signaling a reset of the board. However there was smoke, a new band of villains and a whole load of intrigue, leaving us with even more questions than in December! |
