Hannibal "Contorno" Review

7/4/2015

Let’s start this Hannibal review on a humorous observation - because my lord we need it with this kind of series. Between cannibal puns where, if people were paying attention, saw Hannibal Lecter flat out admit that he is a murdering chef to the gag reel, the show is despairing people and gory bits so it’s natural to want a little bit of comedy into our show. Like some rigid comedy routine, have any of you noticed that Jack never pays for his own drinks? What’s that all about? He always seems to be chewing on some delicious chow made by someone else. Does the man not know how to cook?

Well - maybe not. But whilst he isn’t able to cook-ass. He is able to kick-ass.

Hannibal "Aperitivo" Review

6/28/2015

The shrieks of pain howled across the globe. No. No. Not the whining of detective Will Graham but the copious amount of Fannibals (that’s the nickname for the obsessive audience who dine greedily on Bryan Fuller’s show) all sobbing into their pocket squares this week. Including this intrepid critic, the devastating news that Hannibal has been cancelled by NBC. Despite a loss of ratings and many lamenting that the television series was too graphic or stylish for modern audiences to consume, a large fanbase has formed. Now a rally cry has been made as people practically beg for Netflix to option the show in all its gory wonder. And despite two shaky episodes, episode four Aperitivo finally staged its strength away from Hannibal’s murderous trek through Europe.

Hannibal "Secondo" Review (Spoilers!)

The problem with following, in similarity not story, the aspects of Hannibal and the series prequel Hannibal Rising is that they are the heftiest and sometimes the dullest. In fact, most of the time they were dull and unnecessarily so against the backdrop of the thrilling Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon. See, they were weighted with back story and preposition that changed the dynamics of our cannibalistic murderer. After all, wasn’t he more chilling when there wasn’t a sob story to sympathise with? That he only killed the rude and unapologetically so! Those were the good old days.

Hannibal "Primavera" Review

6/13/2015

One of the main issues with season two was separating Will and Hannibal. With the incarcerated Graham stuck lamenting on his bad dues, Hannibal went on a spree trying not to be caught which wasn’t hard with Detective Jack “Hannibal is not a Cannibal” Crawford. The problems with splitting them up for the first half of the series, which was thankfully rectified when Hannibal missed his little experiment and endeavoured to see him escape. See one of the pair is highly interesting while the other has become a little stale and one-note. And you know who I’m talking about.

So imagine our dismay when continents separate the pair, instead of confinements. Whilst the opening episode to the series was excellent, the second is lacklustre at best with no really purpose other than to show us one of them is sad. Hint: It’s Will Graham.

Hannibal "Antipasto" Review

Our stomachs have been emptied, our television tongues salivating with the lack of gore and horror, our appetites un-whetted and our palate fervent and begging for a little culture in our tastes. Hannibal has left us crying out for more as the cliff-hanger finale of season two, missing its psychological prowess and cannibalistic poetry. But now it’s back, answering some much needed questions (and leaving some still very much up in the air). Curving across the world and jetting off from the destroyed Baltimore, in the aftermath of a finale as four lives hang in balance, Hannibal’s third season lifts off into a much more seductive territory, Florence.

Hannibal - Cookie's Favourite Characters

9/23/2014

Hannibal season two came with much furore. After all, our favourite FBI agent with a dwindling psyche is behind bars, Hannibal Lecter is running wild make meals out of legs and flesh and everyone is clueless to what is going on behind the scenes. And Bryan Fuller and co have created, from the original Thomas Harris canon, a series of characters that we can truly invest in. Those kind of characters that feel wholly real despite the fact that they are all rather poshly dressed, have exquisite taste in the arts and speak right out of a poetry book. It’s been hard to whittle it down to just five, but these are the best characters of season two.

(NB: Due to my other post, there was a crossover of characters and moments so in the interest of keeping it fresh, I’ve not added Beverley Katz or Bedelia. I just HAD to talk about two more though).

Hannibal: Best Moments

Out on DVD today, thanks to Studiocanal Home Entertainment, is Hannibal Season Two. The evocative series from Bryan Fuller is an exquisite masterpiece that is filled with a collection of murderous tableau’s set to the aching story line of villains, illness and deceit. With it riling up our televisions with nightmarish visuals and delicious characters who usually wind up on the dinner table of the titular psychiatrist, it must be difficult to pick some of the best moments from Hannibal. But from random wendigo’s to flesh eating pigs, we’re going to run down the best moments of Season Two.

Hannibal Season 2 - DVD Review

9/17/2014

I believe that Hannibal is the reason that so many horror movies and adaptations are descending to the small screens. Bryan Fuller's re-telling of Thomas Harris’ villainous cannibalistic psychiatrist has achieved critical acclaim and a large flower crown adorned fandom. That first series even hooked this critic, who has loved, obsessively, Hannibal Lecter since she was fourteen because it was simply created by Lecter fans to introduce another dimension to the infamous character. Passionate and divine, the operatic horror television series enters a second season and it excels further than the first in a brand new way.
