Game of Thrones season 3 - Kissed by Fire review (Spoilers)

4/30/2013

Picture
By Jamie Kennett

As the title of the episode suggests, there was a lot of fire this week, and in more ways than one. The actual phrase “kissed by fire” comes from a belief beyond-the-Wall that red-haired people are luckier than most, so my first thought when I heard the name of the fifth episode of Game of Thrones’ third season was that the time had finally come for the North’s most famous bastard to get with a certain wildling girl. Yet the more I thought about it, the more I realised what else must be making an appearance in this episode. The overriding theme this week was indeed fire, and Rh’llor; the religion surrounding the Lord of Light. I don’t know how to pronounce it either. Read on for the rest!

Doctor Who: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS - Review

4/28/2013

Picture
By Matthew Battles

Three men, two brothers and an android, are on a salvaging ship, diligently working through its slim pickings. Meanwhile the TARDIS is whizzing through space; inside the good Doctor and Clara are having a... Can we call it an argument? She’s still convinced that sexy doesn’t like her and the Doctor’s solution has her in a spin; talk to her.

“You’re not getting me to talk to your ship, that’s properly bonkers!” Clara tells him. Between you and me, I don’t think she’s caught on that the TARDIS is alive. Instead the Doctor offers up a plan B; take the wheel. Out of the goodness of his hearts he even puts it into basic mode for her. With a key engraved “Smiths” as well - anyone else spot that? “Basic?” Clara says, “because I’m a girl?”

“No!” The Doctor assures her, though his smirk tells a different story. Now, is it just me or should the Doctor stop putting his TARDIS into basic mode and stop letting his companions play with it? It never bodes well. Remember the Titanic?

Oh this weeks episode of Doctor Who, a salvage crew takes control of the TARDIS and we're treated to more of the Doctor's marvellous machine that we've ever seen before.

"A spaceship salvage team drags the TARDIS on board, sending its systems into meltdown. As the Doctor marshals the motley salvage crew outside, he realises Clara is still trapped within his malfunctioning ship, pursued by a dangerous group of ossified monsters. He has just 30 minutes to find Clara and save his TARDIS before it self-destructs.”

Game of Thrones season 3 - And Now His Watch Is Ended review (Spoilers)

4/23/2013

Picture
By Jamie Kennett

The title of this week’s episode comes from the funeral chant for a deceased brother of the Night’s Watch. I’m sure there were a great many of us who thought this might have referred to Jon Snow when we first saw the name of the episode, but worry not; it was just somebody at Craster’s Keep. There are quite a lot of deaths this week as it happens, not to mention all of the betrayals, double-crossings, investigations, fights, and things catching fire as they so often do in the world of Game of Thrones. With this week’s episode containing arguably the best scene of the whole series so far, it made for some good watching and some equally enjoyable reviewing. Read on, if you so desire, but do beware as the review is dark and full of the usual spoilers…

Cookie 'N' Screen - A Non Fanatic Look at Doctor Who

4/23/2013

Picture
By Cookie 'N' Screen

I have a bit of a confession to make and as I write for a website that deals predominantly in the subject matter, I’ve chosen a pretty risky platform to confess. Ok, are you ready? Here I go; I don’t watch Doctor Who. While I understand that most of the I’m With Geek crew absolutely adore the show, I somehow missed the TARDIS a long time ago. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the show and the few episodes I have seen are pretty great. But I never seemed to get obsessed or infatuated with the show, no matter how hard I tried. Doctor Who just perplexes me.

So I guess I seem to be the one person on this website completely ill equipped to write a Doctor Who article, but I’m going to do it anyway. You see, I would really like to know about Doctor Who and what makes Whovians click. I turned to one of the biggest Doctor Who fans I know; my 11 year old sister Hannah.

Detestable TV - Escape to the Country

4/23/2013

Picture
By Alex Doust

Enter Escape to the Country, the BBC’s daytime show dedicated to helping hard working people find the country house of their dreams. So what happens on this show? A couple or family is selected by the show, this couple or family will be wanting help and expertise in moving house into the country. They will give a list of requirements to the team, things like, we can’t spend more than this, we have to be this close to a school, we need a large driveway etc. (a list of requirements is something I am sure the team behind Escape to the Country never actually glance at, because every single house they show has some serious issue that usually prevents them from making an offer on it). The team will then show them three houses, two picked for them and one super spooky mystery house…

There’s a knock at the door. Normal at first but growing harder. More insistent and demanding with every knock. A nervous Palmer approaches. Pulls the door open. There’s nobody there.

Jericho - Retrospective

4/18/2013

Picture

The good die young, that’s what they always say. Some of the best TV shows that have ever graced our screens only lasted for a short amount of time, even though the stories inside of them could have lasted forever (well, potentially). Jericho happened to be one of those shows. Set in the titular fictional town, Jericho tells a remarkable story about survival, human instinct, relationships, and how far some people will go to protect the ones they love against anybody that puts them in harm’s way.

Game of Thrones season 3 - Walk of Punishment review (Spoilers)

4/16/2013

Picture
By Jamie Kennett

Much like I said last week, things really are kicking off all over the Game of Thrones world again, and this week has been no different. After spending the first two episodes wading through every major character of the show in a type of “where are they now?” feature, the series has finally gotten around to doing what it does best. At the risk of sounding biased to the cause that is Game of Thrones, I reckon this week’s instalment could be the best of the three we’ve been treated to this season. Here’s what I have to say about this week’s jaunt into Westeros, and the bits of Essos we see every once-in-a-while with Dany…
