Broadchurch Finale Review (Spoilers!)

2/24/2015

If you opened up your dictionary and looked up the term “sophomore slump” then you’ll see a picture of Broadchurch Season Two. It is a massive shame because the first series was met with much critical acclaim and had us grasping our faces screaming “holy shit this was so good.” Unfortunately, this year it hit many faults and couldn’t escape the quicksand of its own plots – trying to do too much mystery and drama all at once with Sandbrook and the trial of the original case. As we draw to a close, we all wait with bated breath, in hope that it could reclaim its greatness.

And do you know what? Whilst a little lacklustre, it really did.

Broadchurch "S2, E7" Review

If there is one word to sum up this week’s Broadchurch, it would be “erhowerwerwoeurweur!” The show has been getting a lot of flak for being a more developed version of a soap opera. It didn’t help ITV’s trailer for Emmerdale show up half way through this episode of the beach based drama to help remind us that it is teetering closer to the farm than not. Because, whilst the first season of the drama did well in creating some unique dramatic tension, the second season seems to be adamant at creating enough “punch the wall out of frustrating” ends that I’m surprised it didn’t end with Eastender’s patented “dun dun dun dunununununun.”

Broadchurch "S2, E6" Review

Broadchurch is suffering from a sophomore slump, it seems. After proving that it is one of the more excellent television shows on the planet last year, it seems to have hit a plateau of confusing drama, comedy and mystery. They all mesh into one and there is a sense of urgency to carry on twisting and turning the narrative rather than, with depth, explore the richness of their characters and stories. So with this episode, we certainly feel the weight of both Broadchurch and Sandbrook weigh down on our hearts and there is a dull pain of predictability.

I’m currently curled up under my sheet, with mascara streaming down my face and blonde curtains dancing around my eyes as I wail into my camera phone; “leave Ellie alone.” It’s been a while since a television show has given one of the most impressive characters that you just want to take down the pub, buy a few glasses of wine and give her a massive hug. Though this is Broadchurch and your favourite character (or unassuming) could come out of the woodwork and say “oh, I’ve slaughtered an entire orphanage,” it seems that Ellie Miller is our main favourite. And the only one who gets all of the crap.

Broadchurch "S2, E2" Review

The main problem with being a truly superb series is how far can you carry on the excellence before you run into issues? For example, in season two of Hannibal, the over complicated plot and abundance of characters used to energise the Lecter and Graham relationship along is detrimental to the series as a whole. Orange Is The New Black, whilst exceedingly great a majority of the time, still suffered filler episodes. It’s like a television show is this giant movie and not all minutes can be stellar (the minutes here being certain episodes). So you’ve got to keep this in mind that whilst this week’s episode of Broadchurch may have felt like a filler episodes, it couldn’t be on point all the time.

Broadchurch "Season 2, Episode 1" Review (Spoilers!)

Last year, we were all gripped by this quite yet ferocious drama Broadchurch. Some of us (me) were heavily late to the party. But whenever someone descended onto the murderous beaches of the idyllic British town, torn apart by the death of child Danny, they left feeling their entire spirits pulled through the ringer such as the characters on the show. As the final reveal of the killer, we were biting our nails to the stubs. And when a second season was announced, we were wondering just how they were going to follow up the phenomenal television series.

And last night, they delivered, enhancing on the drama and taking us down a new spiral of emotions.

You May Have Missed: Broadchurch

Sometimes, you may miss a certain acclaimed film or television show. Perhaps the initial teasers didn’t enthral you in a way that it did everyone else. There was no sense of urgency with Broadchurch, it seemed like some waify ITV Drama that focused on a sad plot point. Not even Doctor Who’s David Tennant and the always excellent Olivia Colman seemed to titillate me enough to watch it. Even when it had come and gone with critical furore and many many awards, I was too damn dumb to not go back and find it. Until recently, where I chomped through the drama and my nails within a few days, diving into the tentative and wrought drama headfirst.

I was wrong not to watch it the first time around. Now as we sit, poised for a second dosing of this truly magnificent series, it’s could to remind ourselves of how phenomenal the first season was.
