Gotham "All Happy Families Are Alike" Review

Gotham Season One Finale.

Wow, I’ve never heard a phrase that has given me such undeniable relief as I have. Especially with the word, “finale.” After all, Gotham has been a show filled with lacklustre disappointing plots, with the writers throwing Batman canon at us like monkeys throwing faeces and it smacked us in the face with a strong whiff of shit. The series revolved around the same concept peddled out repeatedly as though audiences were too dumb to notice that they were not only ripping off every crime drama and the original comic but they were spinning around like children in the garden going “ooo Batman” at every turn. So yes, instead of wasting my Monday evenings preparing my brain to not fall into a Gotham induced coma because of how utterly tedious the show was, we get a bit of a break until series two.

Gotham "Under the Knife" Review (Spoilers!)

After last week’s episode, ‘Beasts of Prey’ and even after Gotham has taken over a month out, sadly the show is still the same old drab it has always been. Yes, drab maybe a pretty harsh word it use, and thus a word one would ordinarily try to refrain from using in the same context as Batman; but this week's, Under the Knife offers us nothing we haven’t seen way back since episode one.

Often when a television series goes off air for nearly a month mid-way through its season, it is met with tears streaming down fans faces while they wail into their cushions and scream out of frustration. Yeah. Not with Gotham. Actually, the past few weeks have been a dream and I’d actually forgotten that it existed save for using it as “How Not To Make A TV Show About Superheroes” and re-watching that “Joker” scene staring Cameron Monaghan. Its long departure is extremely detrimental: In that time we’ve had Daredevil and the other DC shows return to raucous effect and we’ve moved on. We fell in love with Matt Murdock and have been obsessing about him ever since.

Now we’ve definitely trodden in the shit as we walk the streets of Gotham again. And oh my god, it is so boring again.

Gotham "Everyone Has a Cobblepot" Review (Spoilers!)

After the latest episode from Gotham, which in all fairness did pick up the pace seemed to be a run up for this weeks. Entitled Everyone has a Cobblepot and just as the title states, everyone has something or someone like our good friend Cobblepot to hide. Of course, we already know that everyone in Gotham has their own secret, except we don’t know how deep some of them go.

Dare I say it, is Gotham picking up the game?

With last week’s stellar reveal of who ‘The Joker’ actually is (finally – it’s about time!) in this juvenile Batman Universe with latest episode, Red Hood, we are offered a much more in depth look at characters that have been overlooked.

The Circus is in town and did you feel a pull of terror in the pit of your stomach? Especially as we finally got to meet The Flying Graysons that will produce that elusive Dick later on. Because it all smattered of Joel Schumacher mixed with the equally lacklustre American Horror Story – murder. The screaming reminders of Batman Forever haunted Gotham. But not in the way you would expect. Because honestly, the crazily bright and vivid Schumacher film is a hell of a lot better than Gotham. I’d even take Batman & Robin at this point.

Gotham "The Scarecrow" Review

I can feel your eye roll from here. Yes, I'm going to spend the introduction speaking about why Gotham had issues, continues to have issues and will never stop having issues. The biggest glaring problem we have at the moment, except the continuous story lines and character traits, is that it so nearly becomes excellent. The infiltrated DC characters, the twisting dance of Gordon's conscience and the alluring sub-villains all smatter of something entirely new and good. What we have an issue with is just how they pull back into repetition. We get to touch the sky with the show, only to fall away from it like our balloon has popped and we've slammed against the side walk. Last week’s episode was genuinely a step in the right direction but still smacked of the same recycled plots that induces so many yawns. This week’s episode did no different and as we edge closer to that end - we feel further away from that great television show we were all promised.

There are a few plot-lines that Gotham is riding on to get itself through this series. The most obvious one, character development or should we say the inevitable formation of future heroes and villains we see before us. Arguably, the ongoing cat and mouse game with all the gangsters in town is helping this one along, however the big question on everyone’s mind (even though it has been ignored for half the season) is who killed the Wayne’s.

Gotham "Welcome Back, Jim Gordon" Review

Throwing punches at Gotham is a little like kicking a bad and limping dog; you’ve already screamed and shouted about its uselessness, any other insults just fill you with guilt. You begin to pity it, like some pathetic thing that cannot get over its own problems, chasing after its own rabid tail and ending up in more pain. You want to throw it a scrap of meat but it just makes the same mistakes constantly so you ended up searching for thin comments of praise to shower it with, patting its back carefully in case it bites you instead.

So can Welcome Back, Jim Gordon stop chasing the same plot points and messages around?

Well, the costumes are great.

Gotham "What the Little Bird Told Him" Review (Spoilers!)

“The cupcake is sweet, the bullet is deadly. A beautiful woman is a dangerous thing.”

After how many episodes we have had from the first series of Gotham, 11 to be exact, the feisty mean machine that is Fish Mooney has finally decided to make her move on Falcone.  However, her well thought-out plan doesn’t go as smoothly as she would have hoped. In the 12th instalment titled What the Little Bird Told Him, the crime-ridden streets of Gotham are threatened with the electrical inventions of Arkham Asylum escapee, maniacal madman Jack Gruber (Christoper Heyerdahl).
