Here it is, we’ve certainly had an interesting ride. There have been some good times, and some bad times. And then there’s that season where everything went a little off the rails. But, somehow, against all odds, they managed to pull it back and return to form. The symphony of the show may have hit some bum notes here and there, but a series should (probably) only be judged as a whole, not by its individual parts.

After setting up a resounding success to last week’s “Modern Espionage”, Community tries to maintain the momentum with “Wedding Videography,” and for the most part it succeeds. There’s lots to love about this episode, but after the tour de force of paintball, it doesn’t quite reach those lofty heights.

This week’s episode of Community had a lot riding on it. After the rather disappointing previous episode, it felt like only a miracle could save Greendale. Thankfully, they did it the only way they knew how. With paintball!

Community has thrown another uninspired episode into the ring, trying to do battle with last week’s powerhouse only to trip on its own untied shoelace and knock itself out before the first punch was thrown. Ordinarily, there would be some saving grace for the show, but it ultimately felt like the writers were phoning this one in.

Sometimes, things can surprise you. The quality on Community this season has had its ups and downs, but Grifting 101 breaks through the mediocrity to show, once again, why Community is one of the heavy hitters for modern sitcoms.

As long as Community continues to air, I will watch it, despite the lacklustre plots that have been plaguing this season. I’ll continue (to watch) in the hopes that maybe, someday, they’ll rekindle the spark they once had. Sadly, with each new episode, that hope fades a little more.

There’s nothing sadder than watching something you love slowly fade away. Community is slowly turning into a ghost of its former self, the performance that it gave last week has thrown light on the cracks in its facade, and this week’s attempts to retain the momentum only serve to point out its failings.

Now we’re reaching the half way point of Community, I’ve started to work on a theory. The reason the show feels so different to its previous seasons is because they’ve hit a proper reset switch, not like at the beginning of Season Five with their Repilot, but a proper full-on reboot. The show has taken things back to the very beginning, with plenty of long forgotten aspects of characters coming out of the woodwork.

After last week’s comparatively weak episode, Community has found its feet once again, with a fantastically absurd set of stories that bring the wackiness back to the show. The jokes fly thick and fast as yet more catastrophes flock to Greendale like a student with no other option in their education. |
