Grimm "Blond Ambition" (Spoilers!)

5/20/2014

So, the big day is here – Monroe and Rosalee finally get their dream wedding and we reach the end of this inconsistent and rather dull season. And I like this show.

For an episode that revolves around Monroe and Rosalee’s wedding, their entire role in the episode can be summed up in a few sentences: Monroe’s dad makes peace with his son’s choices. Rosalee’s very ugly grandmother’s dress gets ruined and she mercifully gets a better wedding dress. And, um they actually do tie the knot and I cheered – I half expected them not to finish the ceremony.

Grimm "The Inheritance" (Spoilers!)

I have to admit, watching the last couple of episodes of Grimm have been a chore. As much as I’ve enjoyed some parts of the show expanding, I feel like the writers have sacrificed the core elements of the show in an effort to broaden the universe, particularly, Nick and Portland’s Wesen-World and Nick’s friendship with Monroe – I’ve been beating that (dead) horse for a couple of reviews now, I know, but the lack of Monroe and Nick’s friendship, arguably the strongest part of season one, just make the show so obviously less. I guess Nick had to “grow up” sometime, but I didn’t think that would mean leaving Monroe behind.

Grimm "Nobody Knows the Trubel I've Seen & My Fair Wesen" (Spoilers!)

For me, nothing says a show is in trouble when the main character gets someone they can mentor. Given that Grimm already has their next season in the bag, I am left assuming the introduction of another Grimm, four episodes from the end of this season is merely lazy writing and an overwhelming desire to give Nick something to do before leading into the finale.

Grimm "The Law Of Sacrifice" (Spoilers!)

When we left Grimm last, Adalind had made it to Renard’s place, with Nick and Kelly outside. Nick goes up to talk to the new parents and we see that there’s nothing Renard won’t do for his child – including pulling a gun on Nick should he come for the child. Understandable since he’s a parent, but not so much when you remember he’s the one that asked the Resistance to send someone to save Adalind and the baby. The Resistance sent Kelly, and she went to Nick, and now they’re there to protect the child and Adalind  – why is he pulling a gun on Nick again when this is what he organised in the first place? Yeah. This baby makes everyone lose IQ points as far as I can tell.

Grimm "Synchronicity" (Spoilers!)

4/7/2014

Picture

This is an episode where nothing much happens around Nick, but the show does an amazing job of keeping the tension elevated with what amounts to an episode of the travels of Adalind and her baby.

It’s also the episode where, sadly, we say goodbye to Meisner – no, he doesn’t die, but he finally gives up Adalind and the baby to the envoy the Resistance sent to ensure their safety – who happens to be Kelly, Nick’s mum. She is such a welcome injection of fresh air into what’s been a fairly slow moving couple of episodes now that the baby has been born. But, back to the story – Meisner and Adalind arrive at a meeting to point to discover the Veraat are already waiting for them. Meisner quickly dispatches the two attacking him, but there are another two attacking Adalind, who Kelly saves. No one knows her connection to Nick at this point.

Grimm "The Show Must Go On" (Spoilers!)

The circus comes to Grimm in this episode – Carnival Metamorphosia to be exact, which is a thinly veiled excuse to have Wesen woge and entertain humans. Sam Witwer (Being Human) plays Max, a blutbad in the circus, who when the episode opens seems to be cheating on his girlfriend with two human girls. They’re intent on figuring out how he changed into the Wolfman they just saw during the show. Max woges and the next thing we know, Hank and Nick are being called in to investigate the girls’ murders.

Grimm "Once We Were Gods" (Spoilers!)

3/18/2014

This episode proves to be one of Grimm’s most well rounded episodes, making use of their huge cast of characters and moving each along enough that there’s actually some forward motion in their storylines.

Grimm "Mommy Dearest" (Spoilers!)

3/13/2014

Picture

In this week’s episode, Grimm shows some wonderful diversity in using a legend from the Philippines – the Aswang. This is a ghoul-like creature that is arguably one of the creepiest things the show has done. It looks terrifying, but more than that, it has the nasty habit of feeding on the life forces of children still in their mothers’ womb.

Grimm "Revelation" (Spoilers!)

3/8/2014

Grimm has gone from strength to strength since season one: what began as a show revolving around Nick finding his way in the Grimm world with his trusty sidekick Monroe, expanded steadily in season two. Juliet found out about his Grimm heritage, Renard was developed, as did Hank’s role in the show. Nick was no longer using the flimsiest of excuses for his work as a Grimm. Best of all, Rosalee was added to the cast, and moved up to a regular for season three. By the end of season two, Nick had support around him, and the show was more cohesive, losing some awful tropes along the way when the main character tries to keep his identity a secret. It was a relief.

And all was well with the world of Grimm. Until season three started and a stall of sorts happened.

This episode is very much based around Monroe and Rosalee, two of the shows best characters. Their plight is both hilarious and terrifying as Rosalee prepares to meets Monroe’s parents.
