Halloween means a lot of different things to people. Maybe it’s a chance to get out the pumpkin carving equipment. Maybe it’s a chance to watch horror films until you’re jumping at the fridge making noises. To the costume industry it’s a chance to make a slutty version of every conceivable costume. For television shows it’s a chance to make a Halloween special, and cartoons are no exception. Whether aimed towards children or adults, animated Halloween specials are the best, because you don’t need to use hokey special effects when it’s all animated anyway. So, sit back, turn off the lights and curl up with a good cartoon.

So, sit back, turn off the lights and curl up with a good cartoon. by Hayley Charlesworth The 100 came back for season two with one hell of a bang, and that high stakes energy continues through this second episode, as we flit between Clarke and the Mount Weather mystery, Octavia and Lincoln’s return to a Grounder village, Bellamy and Finn under Kane’s command, and the result of that surprising twist with the crying baby on the Ark. Answers are given, but even more questions are raised. by Helen Langdon With a short montage summation of its basic premise (magic and wizards are real, normal people are the “Unenchanted” rather than Muggles and aliens want to eat all of the magic), Wizards vs Aliens is back for a third series. When we last left the magical crew, Ursula had died and come back, Benny had come out (after all, Russell T Davies wrote it), and Tom had averted the destruction of the Earth (again) and sent the Nekross back to Nekron. After a summer free of the extra-terrestrial threat, it’s back to school time! And this time, the main threat doesn’t come from the Nekross, but instead a new group of aliens, the Consolidation, who want to remove the Earth’s core. by Hayley Charlesworth Halloween specials are a staple of television. You couldn’t move for spooky episodes of sitcoms in the 90s, or playing with trope conventions in sci-fi. Even this year, Neighbours are doing a zombie invasion special on Ramsay Street. The Halloween special is a license to have some fun away from the usual character arc, and here are just a few of the best examples. by Leah Stone Let’s get this out of the way first: This wasn’t the best ever S.H.I.E.L.D. episode. It’s not bad, but its not all that great. We are taken from place to place, situation to situation and it all just feels a bit jumbled and thrown together, making it hard to focus on some things. by Helen Langdon And that’s it. With a thrilling denouement, featuring enough running around to make you feel exhausted just watching it, Wolfblood has finally come to an end, perhaps forever. The third series finale didn’t just bring the season’s plotlines to a close – what is Segolia up to? Who can be trusted? Just who is going to end up in a relationship? – but also some of the storylines the series has been dealing with from the start. by Robbie Jones What I am about to say is very shocking, and might be hard to hear. But don’t be alarmed, just try to stay calm and just know that everything is going to be okay. It’s gonna sound weird but it’s for the best... Homeland was decent this week. by Gloria Daniels-Moss “Gotham’s golden rule Harvey – No heroes” Spirit of the Goat, episode six of Gotham, certainly puts this narrative back on track. After the last few very episodic snippets we have been given, we have a much different tone here and it makes for a very informative viewing. Starting with a flashback from a case 10 years ago that Bullock and his old partner investigated. The series, and indeed writers, have been hinting at the reasons why Bullock is the man he is today and perhaps this case has something to do with his hostile attitude. by Helen Langdon Are you ready for an algebraic announcement? Season two of Cartoon Network's hit cartoon series, Adventure Time, has finally been released on DVD in the UK. So, it's time to grab your friends and go to very distant lands - because Jake the Dog and Finn the Human are waiting for you! |
