ONCE starts to pick up the pace in preparation for the final three episodes of Season Four, which has seen us journey to the Frozen Arendelle, New York, the fairytale ocean and a realm permanently in the 1920s. The relationship between Emma and Lily is renewed in the present day, illustrating the impact of the Author’s meddling.
ONCE starts to pick up the pace in preparation for the final three episodes of Season Four, which has seen us journey to the Frozen Arendelle, New York, the fairytale ocean and a realm permanently in the 1920s. The relationship between Emma and Lily is renewed in the present day, illustrating the impact of the Author’s meddling.
While both share their Enchanted Forest beginnings and their real-world troubled orphan status, the curse on Lily set-off by Snow White and Prince Charming heavily affected both girls for their whole lives. Lily consistently makes bad choices, as in this episode where we learn that she participated in an armed robbery involving Emma’s foster parents; when reunited they both find themselves in bad situations. All thanks to the Author.
The twist in the tale this week was that adult Lily knows everything about Storybrooke, her mother and what Emma’s parents’ did to her, thanks to a chat on the bus with the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Obviously she is angry and demanding revenge, however will the additional twist in the story be that these feelings are transferred to the Author, who manipulated the Apprentice, Snow and Charming into sending Lily away. If that were the case, Rumplestiltskin’s plans for turning Emma dark may be scuppered once again.

At this point however, it would not be a big shock if Snow White and Charming were to die, or be banished, at the hands of Maleficent or Lily. Their story arc for the second half of Season Four revolved around their terrible secret and their ongoing efforts to keep it from seeing the light of day and ask forgiveness. This has made the characters very repetitive and boring, so perhaps the writers have something up their sleeves to make them more interesting again.
And finally the confusing ONCE family tree became even more complex with the reveal that Zelina, currently posing as Marion, is pregnant with Robin Hood’s baby. Of course this was a terrible, heartbreaking shock for Regina, but considering this was Lily’s first encounter with a band of fairytale characters and magic she appeared to handle it well. Must be in her genes, especially considering that her mother is an unflappable dragon.
Overall this episode picked up the pace a bit more. The possibility of Emma going dark feels very real, and it is a relief that Regina is on hand to pull her back from the edge. However, the series still needs more of Will Scarlett! His back story has still not been addressed, and while his appearance this week was great, we need more; it is frustrating for ONCE Wonderland fans and confusing for those who never watched Wonderland that there are so many gaps and with the finale fast approaching it could be we don’t get these answers until next season… sigh.
