The threads are beginning to weave together in this week’s ONCE as Operation Mongoose gathers pace as the villains close in on the Storybook. Lies and past wrongs are exposed, and the writers even throw in a unicorn for good measure. Warning this review contains spoilers outside of the fairytale classics… and a lot of ‘finally’s.
The threads are beginning to weave together in this week’s ONCE as Operation Mongoose gathers pace as the villains close in on the Storybook. Lies and past wrongs are exposed, and the writers even throw in a unicorn for good measure. Warning this review contains spoilers outside of the fairytale classics… and a lot of ‘finally’s.
Firstly, this week we all learned an important lesson – do not lie; especially when you end up lying to your daughter, grandson and anyone else who’d listen… For the past few weeks we have all been dramatically sighing at Snow and Charming’s sneaking about, trying to send them the message that they were just making everything worse; it had reached the point where it wasn’t really dramatic build-up but just general frustration. It is almost a relief that everyone knows the full story, even if it is the main factor pushing Emma over the edge into darkness.
Although the ‘potential for darkness’ seems an overexaggerated view of what to expect from your child it has drawn together some important plot holes which have been trailing behind for quite a while. Firstly Maleficent’s child was clarified to be a child, not a dragon baby, even though it emerged from an egg. Second the egg, complete with baby, was sucked through a portal to everyone’s favourite magic-free world along with Ursula and Cruella explaining how they escaped the curse. Finally the child grew up to be Emma’s one and only friend from her adoption/running away days, Lily (Lileth). It will be interesting to see how and when they are reunited, and whether the threats of their ‘dark’ potential will be realised or if it is just twaddle.

Operation Mongoose: a tale of The Sorcerer, his Apprentice and The Author. Finally we got some answers, deserving of exclamation marks! The Author was trapped in the Storybook by the Sorcerer because he was abusing his power and changing the actions of important characters. More obviously, he was impersonating a peddler yet could not peddle.. definitely a crafty character, oozing mischief, who will be a fantastic addition to the cast. The twist that the Author is a job description and responsibility is great, particularly with the reference to Walt Disney. Hopefully ONCE will incorporate more nods to Disney history, and when better than alongside elements of Fantasia and a host of Disney’s classic villains!
Still to be confirmed is Will Scarlett’s purpose in Storybrooke, which will hopefully be explained soon, particularly as it is getting tiresome to keep mentioning the lack of it in every review to date. Every other story seems to be overtaking it – next week the Wicked Witch of the West is set to make a return alongside Robin Hood. More about the magic mushrooms, Cheshire Cat and Rabbit please; you can’t just pretend ONCE Wonderland never existed.
