Where Did All The Good TV Shows Go?

Brace yourselves, TV show cancellation seasons is in full force. More brutal than a scene of Game of Thrones (which is staying so no worries there,) this time is fateful for the avid small screen lover who has invested so much into series and shows. As we grab our friends in woe, our stomachs coiled with fright as another studio executor, I mean executive, decides which shows are ill-fitting for our further consumption, it’s a hard and tentative few days of announcements as heads roll.

But why does it feel that this year, shows barely in fruition seem to be taking the chop like The Viking’s sacrificial virgins (which is another show that is staying)? Have we lost faith in originality?

Last week was a low point for Supernatural. While the episode was basically sound, Charlie’s death was a waste. Nevertheless, this week brings another episode and Dean’s going off the deep end thanks to previous events. Can’t blame him, really. Charlie didn’t need to die, but at least someone’s as angry about it as the audience.

The fate of minor characters has long been a question for Supernatural fans. Of all the characters we have encountered though, it is perhaps the fates of Adam Milligan and the Novak family that has most intrigued the fandom. Adam, the Winchesters’ half-brother, was left to rot in hell several seasons ago, with no apparent plans to rescue him. Likewise, Jimmy Novak was confirmed to have ended up in heaven after his body was blown to pieces during one of Castiel’s many deaths. However, it wasn’t until this season that we learnt what had become of his daughter, Claire, and the disappearance of his wife, Amelia.

Well, The Werther Project was certainly . . . delicious, to quote Rowena, and a hell of a lot more enjoyable than The Sorrows of Young Werther (which, frankly, is a book that should be burnt). Not only was this episode a shining example of what Supernatural can do when it really puts its mind to it, but it also continued to push all the pieces on the chessboard into position in preparation for this season’s grand finale. Whatever happens, it’s sure to be dark.

We’re now firmly back into the Mark of Cain territory as the remaining episodes of the season run down and a lot ended up happening in Supernatural this week, which made for a nice change of pace after the previous monster-of-the-week stories. Now, Castiel’s back, Bobby puts in an appearance, Crowley kicks his mom out, and Sam actually stops standing around and does stuff. Honestly, it was about time.

Something is rotten in the state of Supernatural.

The Greatest Love Story Never Told – also known as Destiel, or Dean/Cas – has long been a talking point amongst Supernatural fans, to the point where even mainstream media was writing about its possibility. Would the show acknowledge the obvious chemistry between characters Dean Winchester and Castiel, making it one of the most interesting coming-out stories on television, or would they continue to deny all knowledge while indulging in a hefty case of queerbaiting?

Well. There was an episode. Things took place. Some of these things worked. Most of them did not.

It’s a shame last week’s fabulous About a Boy was followed by such a dud, especially as Halt and Catch Fire set out with all the right ingredients for a good time. At least it passed the Bechdel Test.
