So, are you a binger or have you been pacing yourself? Have you been healthily snacking on Orange is the New Black or are you woozy from 13 course banquet of prison, lesbians and wholesome writing?

I’m guessing that most people have been sat there, frothing at the mouth and overcome by the awesomeness that is Orange is the New Black. Season Three has come with a lot of promise after two stellar seasons before it, so it’s natural that there was a lot of pressure. After an emotional pilot episode, exploring motherhood whilst stuck in prison, and the new emotions that come boiling over with visits from loved ones that are so fleeting.

So let’s have a look at those epic storylines in a show so totally unforgettable.

Orange Is The New Black "Trust No Bitch" Review (Spoilers!)

How do you end a television series?  Do you, with risk of cancellation and bad figures, perch storylines and characters at the edge of a cliff? Let the audience wait a year, salivating over the threads unwoven? Or do you give them resolution? Allow the next season to be open with no set storyline? Well, Orange is the New Black has found an answer - both.

Orange Is The New Black - "We Have Manners, We Are Polite"

8/28/2014

Two things have really irked me whilst writing this final (nooooooo!) review on Orange Is The New Black. One of them has to do with the empty handed cast and crew leaving this year’s Emmys. How the governing body behind the awards failed to adorn the incredible Netflix original series with anything last night is as perplexing as their choice to slam it into the comedy category. Even THEN Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes) and Kate Mulgrew should have at least beaten Julia Louise-Dreyfuss and Allison Janney despite myself respectively loving the latter pairing. The second is that this is it, no more Orange Is The New Black until summer 2015 and I don’t think it is rightly fair to bless us with an intensely superb television series, then snatch it away from us.

Orange Is The New Black - "Little Mustachioed Shit"

In every television show there is always a character who winds you up so much that even their presence makes you loathe them entirely. For Hannibal, it’s Mason Verger. For Sherlock, it’s Magnussen. For Orange Is The New Black, it’s George  “Pornstache” Mendez. Slimy since day one, his off-cuff attitude, manipulation and sexual predator behaviour to the ladies of Litchfield made him one of the most despicable characters to ever grace television. In series one, he got his comeuppance when he was thrown out of the prison for having sex with Daya. And then he, for some unknown reason, came back to the prison much to the dismay of everyone.

Orange Is The New Black - 40 Oz of Furlough

7/26/2014

Furlough is a concept that many people probably don’t understand. After all, the idea is pretty bonkers. You have a criminal, a known law breaker, that for whatever reason (usually personal) needs to leave the prison. And then you have to trust that criminal to come back. Sure, you set up precautions that basically track where the delinquent is going but if they leave, abscond to another country then you’ve basically screwed up. At the same time, they are still humans with family that may get sick or children that may be birthed. Furlough is tricky to handle, it’s a godsend to get and it lands squarely in the hands of our leading character, Piper.

Orange Is The New Black - "Appropriately Sized Pots"

Prison; it’s a difficult sentence to do. While people who have committed crimes most probably deserve to spend their time locked up inside away from society, there is still the empathy of humanity panging as they stuff mouldy food (and tampons) into their mouths. The worst is having a fatal illness, imagine knowing that you are dying and the last moments you are going to see are same walls you’ve been starring at for years and years. Imagine that. Never seeing your loved ones again and having your hallowed whispered words to strangers whose faces have changed since you first arrived, it’s difficult.

Orange Is The New Black - "Comic Sans"

7/14/2014

Usually around the middle of a season, you’ll find the episodes lagging somewhat. You have to adapt to the curve and the changing story lines in a way so astutely clever that occasionally certain episodes fall through the cracks. After all, as much as we’d like it to be so, not all slices of stellar entertainment series can be on point all the time. Can it? I bet you think I am going to say; “well, not Orange Is The New Black” but this episode Comic Sans is about as lacklustre as the font it is named after. And yet, it is still better than the sludge that comes on television daily.

Orange Is The New Black: Lorna Morello

7/6/2014

When the first series of Orange Is The New Black came out back in 2013 and before we were wrecked with its brilliance, there was one character who welcomed us like Piper to the Litchfield prison: Lorna Morello. Originally from New Jersey, she is tasked with driving the inmates from place to place, under the watchful eye of the judiciary system otherwise she could easily escape. Morello also has a tackle with her engagement to the much spoken about Christopher while still getting her kicks with Nicki’s face permanently attached to her privates. Morello was helpful, poignant and squeaky voiced who provided a source of sanity in the otherwise crazed antics of Litchfield prison.

And then we all found out she is actually a little bit insane.

Orange Is The New Black - "You Also Have Pizza"

I cannot stand Valentine’s Day. One of the many reasons why I do not like the commercialised big booming pink hearted money grabbing fucktard of a day is because I am single; we’ll get that out of the way first. I hate being reminded of the gaping hole of air beside me as I lounge in my sweat pants eating Nutella with my fingertips and continuously watching Orange Is The New Bl- and I may have figured out why I am still single. Regardless, no matter how bad I may have it on Valentine’s Day, imagine how bad it is inside Litchfield prison for the lady convicts. And this is precisely why I am talking about Valentines this summer’s day.
