ONCE season four part two seems to be gathering momentum. Slowly but surely it is being to weave its new ‘villains’ storyline into Storybrooke’s day-to-day lifestyle. Maleficent joins the proceedings, with a reimagined backstory putting Snow and Charming in the shadows, while Regina’s quest for redemption includes a little wooden puppet, sorry, real boy.
Well, in the past, after taking a quest to the ‘tree of wisdom’, toasting some guards (thanks to Maleficent the dragon…) and overusing ‘darling’, Snow White and Charming learnt about Emma’s potential for darkness; but also learnt about Emma - it seems that in fairytale world you find out about your pregancy by tree rather than peeing on a stick…
In present day, Snow and Charming (or Sheriff Chisel Chin as Cruella dubbed him) scuttled around trying to stop Emma finding out about her ‘potential for darkness’. Upon learning that they were trying to resurrect Maleficent in the real world they rushed to destroy her ashes, only for the villains to use their blood to bring her back to life. So all in all, another failed day of hero work.
In other news, Operation Mongoose roped in Pinocchio to try and remember his life as an adult to try and gain some insight into how he rewrote the book. After some fantastic scenes with Regina, and a confrontation with Geppetto (Pinocchio’s father), the team got hold of August’s bags which contained some clues about the mysterious author… Hopefully this area of the story will continue to develop, because this is where the magic and excitement really lies. We also got a glimpse of a budding relationship between the Knave and Belle – excuse me, but where is the Red Queen?
By the end of the episode ONCE started to pick up; there was more oomph, like the story is going somewhere. It would be good to see more about the ‘Queens of Darkness’ individual backstories and see some more character development, in the same way we viewers learned to see Regina differently. Is It too much to have three villains in town? Sorry four, Rumplestiltskin… sorry five, recovering evil queen, Regina… sorry six, Emma?
