Gotham "Rogues Gallery" Review

Sometimes, a bit of a break from a television series could do you some good. After all, your initial audience have blinked a couple of time and refreshed their eyes. You’re writers have shaken their wrists and come up with some new ideas. Your actors are all chilled out (I gather this was probably all filmed before the holidays but you get the sentiment). Generally, picking up where you left off has its merits. Gotham had a whole month to put its gigantic plot hammer down and start delicately weaving background, exposition and really enhance its characters that, in case you missed it, were soon to be Batman characters.

Instead, with it picked up an even bigger hammer and went smash, smash, smash on audiences head.

Apathy. It’s a curse that comes from either fear, laziness or repetitiveness. Guess which one Gotham suffers from? At a recent “family” outing, my sister’s fiancé and I were generally chit chatting about the television show which dwindled into an ongoing joke. After all, did you know that Gotham is a corrupt city where Jim Gordon is the only cop who walks the line for justice? Did you get from this television show that Bruce Wayne is deeply wounded by his parent’s deaths and wishes to find their kill (though that is largely a point of Bat- Canon). And did you know that there is a turf war in Gotham? That Barbara Gordon has doubts and worries about her husband? Yeah, it’s hammered into us consistently that it’s tiring.

Yawn. That’s it, I have hit a wall with Gotham now. There is nothing ridiculously major pulling me in (other than Robin Lord Taylor’s Penguin rising up the ranks or Sean Pertwee’s alarmingly gun-ho Alfred who last week entered a different level of child guardianship by training Bruce to fight). The reason I’m starting this a little personal and with a first person narrative is because I’m starting to lose patience. The characters are just hanging there with no purpose other than to repeat the same things they are doing. No wonder a lot of television reviews feel the need to nit-pick every second if it’s churning out pure boredom as I am trying hard not to write dull repeatedly here.

I’d hoped that the introduction of one of the most famed villains, pre-horrible disfigurement would level the television series out of its snoozing period. I was vastly mistaken.

Gotham "Black Mask" Review (Spoilers)

Gotham has been lazing around storylines for a while now. Though last week and the time before that showed vast improvement, we are nowhere near compelled or even excited anymore to see the direction that the DC show is going. Unlike its previous outings such as Arrow and the now popular Flash, Gotham still feels very tentative about packing an almighty punch. And whilst the different atmosphere, stripping back the imaginative villains of the comic book, is admirable – it’s fear of plundering into its characters and keeping them at surface level is detrimental to the entire series that is now being dragged out longer.

The second episode in the series, Selina Kyle, is utterly rooted in corruption. We are consumed by the sheer brutality and outright shocking way in which the authorities run this vicious city of Gotham. The Pilot certainly gave us lots to chew on when it comes to themes and characters, and here we are thrown an even bigger bone. As Detective Bullock, Captain Sarah Essen and even Alfred the Butler start to really show their true colours, we get a glimpse of premature Batman.

The long and ever so agonising wait for TV series Gotham has finally come to an end. With the wait certainly being worth it - this episode fires up quickly as we see a young Catwoman, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) leaping over rooftops, narrowly escaping arrest after stealing milk for the local strays. The initial, very comicbook style and playful opening is quickly replaced with the harsh reality that Gotham is not a safe haven. A young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) long before the creation of his alter ego enjoys the company of his parents after an evening out, only to watch them die in front of him for reasons that are currently unknown.

The Gotham team are spoiling us. Hot on the heels of the trailer introducing us to the world of Gotham and the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents, comes this showcase of some of Gotham’s villains. It’s not a comprehensive list, missing even the brief glimpses of Edward Nygma (the Riddler) and Ivy Pepper (Poison Ivy) that we saw in the original trailer, but it’s an exciting look at three of the villains who look like they might be James Gordon’s biggest foes in Gotham’s first series.

TV shows based on comic books are the thing of today. For years, we’ve had all the Batman cartoons, Spider-Man cartoons, Justice League etc. but in recent years we’ve been hit by show like Arrow and Marvels’ Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Both shows have garnered big followings, but whilst these two have followed on from others (Smallville and The Avengers film series, respectively), Fox’s latest show is taking us back in time. To a time before Batman, in Gotham.

Gotham is in full flight with the new, clean-shaven Jim Gordon showing off his chase skills. Ben McKenzie, post-Southland, seems to have fit right into his new rookie detective role.

Gotham is the tale of Gordon’s rise to the Police Commissioner we all know and love, and possibly his investigation of the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
