Let’s get this out of the way first: This wasn’t the best ever S.H.I.E.L.D. episode. It’s not bad, but its not all that great. We are taken from place to place, situation to situation and it all just feels a bit jumbled and thrown together, making it hard to focus on some things.
A lot of the focus of this episode is on Ward. Skye has been talking to him frequently, not just getting key information but also finding out about her father. Though this week, Coulson decides that Ward isn’t needed anymore, and arranges to hand him over to his older brother, who in return will put in a good word for S.H.I.E.L.D. on live TV and condemning Hydra. Grant and Coulson finally have a proper conversation.
Yes, a fabulous mix of comedy and darker moments. However this is overshadowed by us being constantly thrown from place to place. The Bus, Belgium, America, delving into the lives of Hunter and Bobbi, exploring the broken relationship between Ward and Coulson and Skye and Ward, Fitz and Simmons’ arguments, the back story of the Wards as well as Hydra trying to frame Shield and then kill many of its agents. It is just too much in an hour long episode. Usually AoS is congratulated for its character development and its great action, but this week there is too much of both. No amount of Hunter’s whining, May’s awesome ninja skills or Coulson’s sarcasm can make it better.
Perhaps just a small blip in a so far brilliant series. Hopefully next week will bring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back up to the high standards we are used to having.
