Doctor Who: Cold War - Review (Spoilers)

4/13/2013

Finally, this Whovian has watched, in my opinion, a real episode of Doctor Who for the first time in years since Steven Moffat took over Production of the show.

Cold War took some of the finest aspects of the last 50 years of Who and molded it into a well crafted and wonderfully executed episode. It wasn't the best story, but it was enjoyable and more than anything else, it served a purpose - it reintroduced the terrifying Ice Warriors!

Doctor Who: The Ice Warriors - All You Need To Know

The next episode of Doctor Who, Cold War looms on the horizon, featuring the return of the Ice Warriors who have not been seen on screen since 1974! We at I’m With Geek thought it would be fun to give a small treatise on these fantastic unsung monsters of Doctor Who legend.

The Ice Warriors were an attempt to create a new recurring monster for the show. When the fourth season of the classic series ended, the production team felt something else outside of Daleks and Cybermen were needed. The entire second Doctor era tried hard to capitalize on the various alien threats, hence why it is more commonly referred to as the Monster Era.

The Walking Dead - Welcome to the Tombs (Spoilers)

Welcome to the Tombs, the sixteenth episode of The Walking Dead season 3 was probably the most anticipated episode all year. We open with the Governor torturing Milton. As we know, Milton had betrayed his friend, the Governor by destroying the biters in the pit traps a few episodes back. We learn why the Governor takes the heads of his victims as he tells Milton; you take the heads not to forget, as he blames himself for the fate of his daughter. Milton gives Andrea a chance to escape, leaving pliers on the floor. The Governor gives Milton a chance to make amends by having him kill Andrea but Milton makes an attempt on the Governor and fails as the Governor stabs him repeatedly! He then tells Milton in life or death he will kill Andrea, leaving him to die.

Doctor Who: Top 3 Eighth Doctor Stories

In 1996, the 8th Doctor came on our screens in the form of Paul McGann. Sadly to date, McGann has only ever appeared as the Doctor on screen once with a few hidden cameos in the new series, the most notable being Human Nature where his sketch is seen in the Journal of Impossible Things, although McGann has portrayed the Doctor in countless audios and graces numerous covers for the Eighth Doctor Novels from BBC Books.

"Grace, I came back to life before your eyes. I held back death. Look, I can't make your dream come true forever, but I can make it come true today."

Doctor Who: Top 3 Seventh Doctor Stories

3/28/2013

The seventh Doctor was portrayed by Sylvester McCoy, an actor no one wanted to look at originally but who ended up nailing the part for years to come. Although his television reign was short lived, McCoy held the position for many years, his likeness appearing throughout the extended universe novels before handing over the keys to the TARDIS to Paul McGann in 1996.  The 7th Doctor was mysterious, cunning and most of all manipulative. He was a man with a plan and a mission.

“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea is asleep and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we’ve got work to do.”

Episode 15 of The Walking Dead, This Sorrow Life, opens with Rick, Herschel and Daryl discussing their next play. Rick has given in and believes that sacrificing Michonne to the Governor is his only move. Even though both Herschel and Daryl feel this isn’t the group and how they operate, they side with Rick. However Rick needs one more onboard so he approaches Merle, asking him why he does what he does. Merle answers that he has no idea what has shaped him, however he sees straight through the sheriff and calls Rick on his mask of bullshit, telling him he hasn’t the guts or the spine for what he intends to do next.

The Walking Dead - 'Prey' (Spoilers)

3/19/2013

The Walking Dead season 3, episode 14, Prey is all about war. As we left last week both camps, Woodbury and the Prison we’re preparing to go to war. We were left with each side not believing the other’s ultimatums. Tonight’s episode opens with a flashback of Michonne and Andrea spending time together on the road. One night at a campfire, Andrea inquires about Michonne’s undead companions. We learn from a glimmer of her reaction that she may have known them in life before they became zombies. If you read the comic book you know this has a completely different turn of events and the two walkers were people close to Michonne.

The Walking Dead - 'Arrow on the Doorpost' (Spoilers)

3/14/2013

The Walking Dead
, season three, episode 13 Arrow on the Doorpost, starts this week ‘in media res’, something Robert Kirkman has become good at with his television interpretation of his The Walking Dead comic book. The episode starts with Rick and the gang arriving at what looks like a factory or farm silo for a clandestine meeting between Rick, Andrea and the Governor.

Both leaders have come a long way in their journeys; both are healing from recent events and also coming to grips with their world. Of course even if the Governor claims that he has come in peace he still has a weapon taped under the table. It is obvious that the Governor is ready to assassinate Rick Grimes at this meeting.

The Walking Dead - 'Clear' (Spoilers)

3/5/2013

Picture

What we have with this season of The Walking Dead is two men dealing with their own personal demons. You have both Rick Grimes and the Governor who are broken men trying to fix themselves while still holding their own along with their people.

We begin episode 12 of season 3, Clear, with Rick, Carl and Michonne looking for supplies out on the road. As they drive past a living hitchhiker who they try hard to ignore, we see just how removed and isolated they have made themselves as a group even as the hitchhiker catches up to them; they simply leave him once more.

The Walking Dead - 'I ain't a Judas' (Spoilers)

2/27/2013

Picture

The 11th episode of the current series, I ain't a Judas, is an interesting episode in this second half of season 3. It picks up a little after the previous episodes explosive cliffhanger; for those of you who didn't watch last week, shame on you again, there is no reprieve for spoilers of episodes a week old, so if you are wishing to be surprised then read no further.
