by Helen Langdon He won gymnastics competition Tumble on Saturday, and on Monday, BAFTA-winning Bobby Lockwood was back for season three of CBBC’s Wolfblood. And the episode wasted no time in reminding us exactly how much had changed, with previous main character Maddy having to flee the country with her parents. Everyone’s missing Maddy as the season begins, with Rhydian wandering the woods howling, and Shannon and Tom hanging out in the empty Smith house just in case the absent Wolfbloods decide to come home. But moping around isn’t all they’ve got to deal with, as scientist Dr. Whitewood is determined to find more Wolfbloods and prove that she’s not insane. Although the fact that she’s changed her face goes completely unremarked. Hopefully this isn’t the last we’ll see of Whitewood, as the parallels between her and Shannon are just too good. Whitewood is the grown-up version of first-season Shannon, to whom all that matters is getting to the scientific truth (yay, women in STEM careers on TV! But maybe don’t take it to these extremes, kids). There’s still a possibility of Shannon going down that route, and with the looming spectre of leaving school hanging over them in the form of career fairs, it’s going to be interesting to see if Shannon places a priority on her friends or academic recognition. Maybe the most interesting part of the episode, though, was the introduction of the Wolfblood organisation Segolia. Throughout the first two seasons, Maddy’s parents made references to powerful Wolfbloods, who were able to smooth through little things like social services. This is the first time that we’ve really got to see them on screen. At first glance, something doesn’t seem quite right about them – a Wolfblood business with flights to Norway for the full moon? Who’ve never met wild Wolfbloods? Who’ve sent someone out especially to recruit Rhydian straight out of school? Who offer a scientist a job even after she’s threatened to expose their species to the world? No, there’s almost definitely something up with Wolfblood Inc, and with Dacia appearing in the “Next time” teaser, it looks like Segolia and its corporate idea of a pack might be what tempts Rhydian away this time. After all, the episode may have ended with the realisation that Maddy can return home, but it can't be as simple as that. Will their Wolfblood/human pack ever be complete again? Comments are closed.
