‘You’re not a hero. You’re just a young man who got struck by lightning…’
Wrong!
The first full-length trailer for Arrow spin-off, The Flash, has emerged from the vaults of the CW and brings a lot of things to our attention. The world of this new show, which stars Grant Gustin as the titular hero, draws on ideas from several different superhero continuities (the new costume is a couple of horns away from being Dare Devil’s, for instance). The action takes place within the fictional setting of Central City, and Barry Allen (Gustin) is struck by a special form of lightning during his search for the evil super-powered entity which killed his mother several years prior.
The trailer introduces us to several key characters in the show and teases and what kinds of super-villains we might see, such as a meta-human who can control the local weather as well as another human who is able to move at the same speed as The Flash. Apart from the occasionally terrible piece of dialogue such as ‘That lightning didn’t just strike you. It chose you…’ The Flash seems to at least have most of its cards on the table already, which is a good thing for the show’s developers as it means that by the time the show arrives it will already have developed somewhat of a fanbase (of which we have Arrow to thank for that).
Whilst the show doesn’t seem at the moment to be offering anything we haven’t seen before on these superhero spin-off shows, how it is handled could distinguish it, make it unique. And I for one am looking forward to how that turns out, for better or for worse.
