Coogan stars as 44-year-old Thom Payne, a man whose world is thrown into disarray when he gets a new boss, a man 20 years younger who says things like “digital”, “social” and “viral”. He’s then forced to discover if he is happy, or, as guest star Ellen Barkin says in the teaser below, whether “it’s not the pursuit of happiness that’s our problem. It’s our inability to accept when we have maxed out.”
The series looks set to deal with all of the problems of modern middle-aged life, including work, home, and whether or not getting an erection is worth being unhappy.
Happyish was created, written and executive produced by critically acclaimed author and regular This American Life contributor Shalom Auslander. Emmy Award nominee Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You, The Office) will executive produce and direct the pilot, and Kwapis’ producing partner Alexandra Beattie will also serve as co-executive producer, under their In Cahoots banner.
As well as Steve Coogan, Happiness will star Kathryn Hahn and Emmy-winning Bradley Whitford, along with guest appearances from Emmy and Tony Award winner Ellen Barkin, Emmy Award winner Carrie Preston, Molly Price and Andre Royo.
