Coming from the success of Hannibal and Bates Motel, a lot of movies seem to be getting the television treatment…..a lot of movies. So when FX (the television channel behind Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story) announced that the Coen Brother’s classic cult film Fargo is heading to the little screen, many clasped their hands in delight and some in horror. After all, the darkly comic tones of Coen are hard to replicate. While this may centre in the universe of Fargo, it features little of the original characters and in celebration of its pending air date (15th of April,) FX have released seven minutes of the first episode and several tantalising trailers.
Starring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thorton (who also stars in Coen feature The Man Who Wasn’t There) it revolves around a sadistic drifter who aims to distort small town Minnesota with his malice. One of the people who comes on the sticky end of his plight is salesman Lester Nygaard. Cue some pretty sick and twist humour that will grab a pretty niche audience (and hopefully, appeal to a large one)
These trailers and sneak peeks are simply fantastic. Actually feeling much more inclined to the Hannibal series rather than the appalling Bates Motel, Fargo already sets that sinister sleepy town feel with this impressive seven minute introduction. What’s more, proving yet again that he is one of the most talented actors around, Martin Freeman seems to effortlessly slide into the Minnesota accent as though he has been spouting American all his life. There is something intriguing about Lester and Freeman already has set him up to be this down and out salesman, pecked around by life. Not to mention, Billy Bob Thornton’s character, though we see a little snippet of him, has already made us curious about his role in Fargo.
Is it safe to say that Fargo has done pretty well so far? Well, that’s what we are saying. Judging by everything we have already 15th of April looks set to release a television series unlike any other. Keep tuned.
