Things are moving pretty slow in The Walking Dead right now, but that’s not quite a bad thing. There’s currently no imminent threat, although you’d be forgiven for thinking there was....
Misleading trails aside, it was a very decent episode this week. The relationship between Daryl and Aaron is quite interesting. It’s fair to say that Daryl has been quite lost since Beth’s passing, and he doesn’t feel like he has a purpose anymore. Well now he has one, as Aaron asks him to be Alexandria’s new recruiter. It’s nice to see Daryl let his guard down, him being so abrasive to everyone was likely to get boring so the fact him and Aaron actually have a bond is quite refreshing, and Aaron’s speech about Daryl knowing the difference between good and bad men was refreshing for the character too. Aaron is certainly becoming more likeable and trustworthy, and he has a nice screen presence.
Warning: The opening titles of this episode are a trick. For the first time since the episode 9, the titles credit Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese) and Emily Kinney (Beth) as part of the main cast, but don’t be fooled, they only appear in flashbacks. There’s no really point in crediting them main cast as it just raises expectations, like maybe we’ll see them in ghost form as Sasha deals with her demons, but no. It’s very much just pointless billing.
Finally, there was Carol’s sudden creepiness as she intimidates Sam into keeping his mouth shut, but it’s a weird scene to talk about. Melissa McBride’s performance was fine, don’t get me wrong, but Carol just seems too threatening now. It’s understandable why, after everything she’s been through, but it’s making her unlikeable when previously we were celebrating her for being a badass.
Overall, it was slow but steady episode that sees everyone settling in nicely. Let’s hope this new next time trailer isn’t a load of crap, and we’re actually getting the exciting and intriguing episode it looks to be.
