The Walking Dead "Crossed" Review (Spoilers!)

It’s a rescue mission (Well, the beginning of one) in this week’s thrilling instalment of The Walking Dead as we approach the mid season finale.

This is the first time in a while that the entire main cast has been in one episode together. True, the majority of them were together for a few episodes at the start of Season Five, but we still never saw Beth. Now, we see clips of her at the hospital, along with all the other characters. Unfortunately though, they’re still not reunited, but that could all change soon as Rick, Daryl, Sasha, Tyreese and Noah set out to rescue Beth and Carol from Dawn and the hospital staff. It’s quite impressive how they managed to include every single character and the separate storylines in one episode without feeling rushed, compressed or tight. The most interesting storyline was obviously the rescue mission, as all we got from Glenn and the gang’s side was a character development story (Not that that’s a bad thing), namely Rosita who thus far has been nothing but a one dimensional character, but seems to actually be gaining a personality. What’s worrying though is that we’re supposed to root for Glenn and Maggie as the show’s couple (An OTP, if you will), yet every time Glenn talks to Tara or Rosita in this episode, it seems he’s like flirty or falling for them. This might be intentional and may actually be a plot point when the show returns (And if it is, that’s just terrible) but if this is an accident, they really need to work on it. You know something is going wrong when gained friendship is coming off as romantic.

Let’s hope Beth actually does rejoin the group, as being by herself has really done her no favours. Where this should’ve been an opportunity for her character to develop, Emily Kinney, as lovely as she is, just isn’t capable of handling things on her own (“Rupert Friend Syndrome” as we called it before, though Rupert Friend doesn’t even suffer from it anymore) and really has not improved the character in any way. It’s not nice to say it’s all her fault, but it’s hardly the writer’s fault either. The scripts are fine, she SHOULD be developing but it's Kinney’s acting barriers that stop that from happening. So what needs to happen is either she rejoins the group and becomes a part of something interesting again, or she gets killed off. Then the problem with that is that no one will really care. It’s not like everyone hates Beth, but a number of fans have expressed their disinterest in her demise, adamant that it will make no impact on the show whatsoever. They’re probably right to be honest; let’s say they wanted to repeat what they did in last year’s mid season finale, and hit us where it hurts before making us wait two months, they’d have to do something pretty spectacular. I’m not being funny but last year, Hershel got decapitated and the prison was destroyed, leaving the entire group scattered and unsure of what comes next. How do you top that? Well, you don’t really, which is why they hopefully won’t try to in the next episode, otherwise it may not be as good as it should be. If they want to kill someone, it’ll have to be someone like Daryl or Glenn, a fan favourite who no one is quite ready to say goodbye to just yet.

Whatever happens next week (And it looks like a LOT is going to happen), it better be a worthy send off and leave us on the edge of our seats until February. Next week we’ll take a look at the mid season finale and look back on Season Five so far, and then if things go well, we’ll be crying in agony until it comes back on!
