The Originals proved once again why they deserved their own television show with this week’s mind blowing episode. One twist after another kept the audience guessing at what would happen next, and it was not predictable; a sign of a brilliant show!
Whereas Joseph Morgan is always an abundant actor, another side of Klaus was shown with a bit more humour and humanity which coincided perfectly with the apocalypse in the background to lighten the show but not over shadow the solemnity of the story. Like season one Damon from The Vampire Diaries, he had some witty one liners which broke the tension slightly and stole the scene. Morgan’s deliverance of these was spot on and strangely, seemed appropriate despite what was occurring in the bigger storyline.
The costumes were flawless. Davina’s dress was white yet simple and matched the theme of the episode to a T. Rebekah was looking extremely suave and dapper in a dark trouser suit which contrasted with her bright hair. Hayley looked comfortable in her maternity wear and Elijah, though in his suit as usual, had taken off his jacket for a more casual appearance. He meant business, and not in the usual, money making way!
This show pushes all of its actors and characters to their limits and beyond. They take no prisoners and deliver a gripping tale with flawless acting. What more can you ask for? The writing in this episode was strong and many major story arcs incorporated. Where was Cami though? After last weeks’ episode, it seemed as though she would have a larger role. The vampires and witches did have a lot on their plate but no more on that for now. The constant betrayals are still mind boggling and will soon hopefully be explained better or just be reduced in number.
This episode has been the best of the season and show so far. It felt like a season finale and was full of non-stop twists and turns. Before one aspect could be internalised and accepted, another plot point would be thrown at the audience. This should be overwhelming and confusing but it kept the tension running and built the adrenaline up for the end of the episode where … you’ll have to watch it and find out! The only problem with this is that the producers now have a lot to live up to for the actual season finale. Let’s hope they’re up to the colossal task!
