With Doctor Who returning on the 23rd of August, featuring the new 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Louise-Coleman), we decided to put together a very informative list of some of the greatest Doctor Who villains of all time.
Every incarnation of The Doctor (excluding Three, Eight and Nine) has dealt with the Cybermen. They are a race of cyborgs, a purely organic species of humanoid, originating from Earth’s twin planet Mondas. They became more and more artificial with increasing amounts of implants, eventually deleting all emotions from their minds. In more recent episodes, they have made another advancement so they can upgrade instantly to fix flaws and weaknesses.
The Daleks are also one of The Doctor’s long time foes. They are a cyborg race, created by the scientist Davros, near the end of a one-thousand year war against the Thals. They feel no pity, passion or remorse. Their main plan was for world domination and extermination. They have been often referred to as The Doctor’s greatest enemy. Between the 1996 television movie and the 2005 revival, a conflict between the Daleks and the Time Lords occurred off-screen. The Daleks were virtually wiped out and Gallifrey thought to be destroyed. Since the reboot in 2005, the Daleks have featured many times against The Doctor.
The Weeping Angels are a more recent Doctor Who villain, created by Steven Moffat. Weeping Angels have the appearance of a statue. However, when they aren't being observed, they can move very quickly and silently. They feed by capturing a victim and then sending them back in time, feeding on the time energy. If two Weeping Angels have eye contact, they will be stuck in stone form, and so they often have their eyes covered to prevent this. When in their stone forms, they are extremely difficult to destroy.
The Silence are also a recent creation; their first appearance was in the 2011 episode The Impossible Astronaut by Steven Moffat. Anyone who sees the Silence forgets seeing them as soon as they look away. However, they retain any suggestions made to them during the observance. It is with this power that they are able to play a major part in Earth’s history without anyone knowing and without being noticed.
The Zygons were first featured in the 1975 serial Terror of the Zygons, and were re-introduced to the show in the 2013 episode The Day of the Doctor. They have shape-shifting abilities and very few are left. However, they have still tried to take over Earth on multiple occasions. One ship planned to use the Skaresen (Loch Ness Monster) to attack an energy conference, but were defeated and destroyed by the Fourth Doctor and UNIT. In The Day of the Doctor, the Tenth Doctor described it as a “Big red rubbery thing covered in suckers. Surprisingly good kisser.” David Tennant stated they were his favourite monsters from Doctor Who.
The Master is The Doctor's archenemy. He was first introduced in 1971 and has appeared as many other reincarnations (due to taking possession of other people’s bodies and regeneration). His main aims were to take over the whole universe, hurt/kill The Doctor and to increase his life span. As a child, his Time Lord initiation left him with a permanent four-beat sound of drums in his mind. It is he that provoked the war between the human and draconian empires.
The Time Lords resurrected The Master (after being seemingly sucked into the Eye of Harmony) in order to use him as the ultimate front line soldier in the Time War. He ran away with fear and became human by storing his Time Lord memories and nature in a Chameleon Arch. He later regains his Time Lord memories and, after being shot, regenerates into the current Master, played by John Simm. He attempts to take over earth as Prime Minister, and is killed after refusing to regenerate and become The Doctor’s prisoner. He is later resurrected and gains the power to manipulate electricity, move extremely fast and jump long distances. He makes everyone on earth a replication of himself, before learning that he was just a pawn in Rassilon’s (leader of the Time-Lords) plans, and, bent on revenge for a lifetime of manipulation, follows Rassilon into the Time War.
Omega was thought to be one of the greatest and most heroic Time Lords of all time, known as one of the founders of the Time Lords. He was developer of the Hand of Omega, designed to control the reactions within a star with the aim to provide a source of power for time travel. It was thought that he was killed in a supernova that then became a black hole, and his name went down in history. Rassilon used the nucleus of the black hole to create the Eye of Harmony, which perfected time travel technology.
It was later revealed that Omega had not died, but had been stuck in an antimatter universe from which he couldn’t escape. His solitude turned him insane and he was bent on revenge for the Time Lords apparently abandoning him. He made two attempts in the TV series to re-enter the positive matter universe, attempting to take advantage of The Doctor both times, and both attempts were thwarted by The Doctor.
The Rutan Host have waged a millennia-long war against the Sontarans. They are a race of amorphous green blobs that can absorb electric energy and generate lethal bioelectric shocks. They can also create a force field to absorb energy from weapons. However, this is hard to sustain. They live in a hive-like society under a Queen, using first person plurals in communication. Without their Queen, the Host would fall apart. They can also shapeshift to infiltrate alien societies and adapt to other environments.
The Rani is an evil scientific genius and treats everything as secondary to her research. She has enslaved entire planets to help her experiments. She was originally intended as a reccurring foe for The Doctor, but only appeared in two episodes. It is The Rani that causes the regeneration between the Sixth and Seventh Doctor by trapping the TARDIS in a time funnel. The Tetrap (which The Rani employs as protection) make her return them to their home planet and her plans are thwarted.
