I was given the challenge to come up with my “Dream Team” for Doctor Who, just a fun thing to write about gearing up for the Christmas special and the departure of Matt Smith. After a lot of soul searching I think I've found the perfect match up for who should play whom.
Tom Hiddleston is known most recently for his role as Loki in the Marvel Film Universe. However he has also starred in films such as Archipelago (2010) and Midnight in Paris (2011.) Hiddleston has also been in TV series, such as Suburban Shootout and Wallander. Also he is a popular fan favourite. But why choose him as The Doctor when we know him to portray a more antagonistic role? For those of you that have either met Tom or seen him in interviews, he is nothing like his most famous character. He is extremely down to earth, normal and easy to get along with. Suitable qualities for someone who could play The Doctor. On the other hand, a Trickster God style Doctor would be a great contrast to Smith's playful and clumsy 11th Doctor, with plenty of behind the scenes planning and last minute reveals, or perhaps a sterner, more demanding Doctor. No matter what, Tom would do a sterling job!
I have loved Jennifer Lawrence as an actress ever since she stared as Katniss in The Hunger Games (one of my most favourite book series to date) and from this she has soared to fame. Before THG she starred as the lead in Winters Bone, played Mystique in X-Men: First Class, and has since been in The Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle (due out in cinemas on the 1st of January.) She not only has an extensive film repertoire but also starred in 31 episodes of The Bill Engvall Show. I think Jennifer Lawrence as the companion would be much like Donna Noble, sarcastic, sassy and funny, just like Lawrence is in really life, as well as being extremely down to earth and someone fans can relate to.
At first I was thinking about perhaps having Benedict as The Doctor and Tom as The Master, but then Cookie, our amazing film editor (What about me, Leah? - Ed.), said that Benedict is “too straight” to be The Doctor. Then I realised, of course, it should be the other way around!
Benedict is famous for his portrayals both on screen and off screen, his most prominent role being Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV series. This means he doesn’t just have knowledge of the television industry, but also has experience with working with the BBC. Plus, he was so grand at playing Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness, I have no doubt he would be wonderful as The Master. He can be dark and evil at times, but can also shift moods to humerous and bouncy if need be, and this fits perfectly with The Master’s dramatic shifts in personality.
Now this is where I get controversial. Although I do love Steven Moffat as a producer and a writer, his work on Sherlock is amazing! But, in my opinion, Doctor Who episodes were better when Russell T Davis was writing them. I will say now that this has nothing to do with my preference of the 10th Doctor over the 11th. The Doctor Who episodes before 2010 when Moffat took over definitely appeared to have better plots. Although Moffat was the writer during Davis’s time producing Doctor Who it was down to Davis to look over the script and make any amendments. Since his departure I think Doctor Who has become less scary and more trying to appeal to a young audience as well as old. However I always preferred Doctor Who when I was hiding behind the sofa, and when The Doctor had the image of an angel coming to save you from all the nasty monsters. But again, just my opinion. So I would keep Moffat as writer but bring back Russell T Davis as Executive Producer.
Alice Troughton has directed many, many, MANY TV shows. They range from Eastenders to The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctors to my beloved Merlin. She has a portfolio of TV productions that can be beaten by very few people. Plus she has dabbled in directing Doctor Who (the episodes ‘Midnight’ and ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’) so she would be no stranger to the show. Plus she has bundles of talent across a range of genres. Merlin is one of my favourite TV shows, and she directed 13 of the episodes. There is no doubt that I would have complete and utter faith in her if it was ever announced that she would become a permanent director of the show.
Alexandre Desplat is my favourite composer that is still alive. He has composed for over 150 films and TV series, my favourites being both of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films, The King’s Speech and Argo. If anyone can do a brilliant re-make of the Doctor Who theme or to just put together music that would bring so much more emotion and ambience, then Alexandre Desplat is the right man for the job!
