With not long to go before the Twelfth Doctor makes his first proper appearance (literally minutes), it's time to announce the winner of our Doctor Who Companion Faceoff. Although some other rounds were very hard-fought, in a few cases being decided by a single vote, it's safe to say that the eventual winner was a bit of a landslide. ..Brigadier Sir Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. Companion to the Doctor throughout the Doctor's many incarnations, popping up in The Sarah Jane Adventures to help out an old friend to defeat the Bane, and with his daughter now carrying on the Lethbridge-Stewart UNIT heritage, he's a worthy winner of the title.
Throughout his acquaintance with the Doctor, he's faced down nearly every iconic enemy in the universe. People might argue that the Doctor is quintessentially British, but the Brigadier is probably the most stereotypically British companion, facing every eventuality with a stiff upper lip, a wry sense of humour and a determination to keep calm and carry on. And he loves a good cup of tea.
Although we'll never get to see Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart interact with any new Doctor, his legacy lives on in past episodes, books and Big Finish Audio, along with Kate. Others claim the title of most faithful companion, but it's hard to argue with the Brigadier's loyalty throughout the years.
