PLANET OF ORIGIN: Earth
DOCTOR: Second
Jamie is the most Scottish of companions, picked up while fighting for Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Culloden. Generally clad in a kilt and tartan, Jamie didn’t have much trouble acclimating to the notion of travelling through time and space. Instead, he looked at everything in terms he himself could make sense of, and often his simple common sense provided the solutions his more sophisticated travelling companions missed. Jamie was always brave and willing to protect his friends, and was one of the Doctor’s most loyal companions. Most physically loyal, anyway – Jamie liked to grab hold of people for reassurance, and the Doctor was his favourite target.
PLANET OF ORIGIN: Earth
DOCTOR: Eleventh
Amy has the honour of serving as a companion of the Doctor at two times in her life, encountering him (and feeding him) while still a child, and then spending her life waiting for him to return. Amy’s story is all about leaving childhood behind, and the attachments we make, in order to form new ones. When she first leaves with the Doctor, she’s trying to escape her impending nuptials, flirting with and kissing her Raggedy Man and being slightly put out when Rory ends up along for the ride. But it’s Amy’s love for Rory that comes to define her. She remembers him throughout dimensions, even recalling him when he’s been erased from history, and ultimately chooses to live her life with him, trapped in the past, rather than go on with the Doctor without her husband.
Two different eras of TV - two very different companions.
