Rejoice everyone, for it is Empire Day in our glorious galaxy! A time where one and all remember Emperor Palpatine’s victory during the Clone Wars and the defeat of the Jedi scum!
At least that’s what the official story is in this week’s episode, the first in a two parter.
This week’s episode takes us back to Lothal to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the events of Revenge of the Sith which also happens to coincide with a dark time for Ezra and with the Empire unveiling a brand new Tie-Fighter, as well as Imperial troops searching for an escaped Rodian with vital secrets in his brain.
Once again, the focus of the episode is back on Ezra. His character still feels a little weak as the protagonist and audience surrogate, but his reasons for fighting the Empire are explored during the episode and there is no reason why this won’t be expanded upon in the conclusion of the two parter, next week. Unfortunately, the spotlight on Ezra means that the rest of the cast are, once again, forced to play bit parts to him. There’s a nice moment when Zeb and Jarrus spot their nemeses (Agent Kallus and The Inquisitor respectively) yet this gets ignored about for a high speed action sequence until the very end of the episode.
Star Wars Rebels is still working hard to be enjoyable, however it seems to be losing some steam. Hopefully, the cliffhanger ending and next week’s episode will redress the balance somewhat.
