The power trio of Suranne Jones, Leslie Sharp and Amelia Bullmore once again give a fantastic performance giving us an insight into the Manchester Metropolitan Major Incident Team. This week is a big warning about casual hook-ups with strangers – as in you could end up dead in a bath. And with that morbid life lesson…

Rachel’s new love interest - Detective Super Pemberton (a high ranking police officer) – has a lot of potential for drama and confrontation. In this episode they were wrestling with the decision to make the relationship public or not, which could cause others to accuse her of sleeping her way to the top; having just gained the respect of her team in her Sergeant role it could be disastrous. But we love a good bit of drama!

We also see the trauma of Gill’s kidnapping experience brought to the fore through her heavy drinking and fear of driving unless the car has been checked for unwanted passengers. While Rachel was driving her home, Gill drunkenly revealed how she had originally offered the Sergeant role to Janet leaving Rachel as the second choice. This is another example of how the incident in Season three affected her as in the past she wouldn’t have been so unprofessional, but could also be related to the fact that she is retiring in the near future. The revelation creates a rift between Rachel and Janet putting added tension on the group during the murder investigation, particularly as Janet had been told not to say anything, robbing her of the chance to explain the situation to Rachel.
The side story of Janet’s dating and the regular office banter provide a welcome contrast to the serious drama of inter-colleague confrontations and suspect interviews; another great episode with a good balance of character personal storylines and police work leaving viewers both satisfied and intrigued for next week.
