Sailor Moon Returns!

11/28/2013

Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight, never running from a real fight, she is the one named Sailor Moon! That’s right! Our favourite cowardly warrior, Sailor Moon is making a return with her friends, Sailors Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, and will shortly be coming to a TV near you! Previously expected to be released in Summer 2013, it has been pushed forward to Winter 2013, with a universal date (currently unknown).

Sailor Moon first arrived on the scene in 1991 in manga form and became an anime in 1995. Many people, such as myself, grew up with this series and as a young adult, I still love it; but am I excited for the reboot? Hm…

Not a lot of information has been released about the new Sailor Moon. There have been no spoilers, no images, no trailers. This is getting frustrating, as I wait in anticipation, afraid they may ruin what, for me, is my childhood and a classic show. There are rumours that Vince Corazza, who voiced Damien in the 1995 anime, is returning to voice the beloved heart throb; and the original voice of the beautiful blonde, Sailor Moon may also be returning. Considering Sailor Moon had several different voice actresses, I’m unaware of which one this is being referred to. The storyline is supposed to follow the manga more closely than the 1995 series, as the series over took the books and therefore had to create its own story. Sailor Moon’s transformation lockets and the Scout’s transformation wands may have had a makeover so keep an eye out for them in the show. The final bit of information I have managed to dig up, though like the rest of this article nothing is confirmed, is that the artwork has been upgraded, though as above, no images have been released.

Sailor Moon was an iconic show which aimed to teach young children good morals. Granted, the skirts were a little short and the dubbed version cut some of the racier elements from the show, it was ultimately child friendly. I am begging that the new art work won’t follow the current trends of sharper angles and more revealing clothing. The faces of the Sailors would be sharper with more angular eyes, and their skirts shorter to sexualise the characters. The art work in 1995 was beautiful, and whereas some touching up wouldn’t hurt, I really hope they don’t entirely change the style. This is anime, not some new style Disney cartoon. If they do this, in the name of the Moon, I’ll punish them!

Whereas I did fall completely in love with the original, I do hope they vary the storylines more. In season 1, the Negaverse was collecting energy from humans, then new baddies were doing the same thing. Repeat ad nauseam. Each season followed the same process in that sense, and only the overarching plot saved the series. It grew to be very repetitive, so hopefully, the new series will not make the same mistake.

So, to answer my previous question: Am I looking forward to this reboot? My answer is that I really don’t know. I’m dreading it due to the fact that there is no information out there about the show, but I’m so excited because I love the original and I truly hope they build upon it and improve it. I guess I’ll just have to be patient.
