Peter Jackson is well known for his work as producer, writer and director of both the Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit, as well as producing Tintin, writing, directing and producing The Lovely bones and the same with the 2005 reboot of King Kong.
Well a vast majority of his time has been dedicated to the fantasy genre so you would therefore assume that he would know what he is doing. Plus although he has yet to direct anything other than films, his experience will more than likely shine through if he does get the chance to direct an episode. However he does have to beware the traps when transitioning between films and TV, as TV budgets are a lot less than films, so it will be interesting to see how he deals with that. But I think that he will go out all guns blazing and not hold anything back. Also obviously the schedules are shorter for TV shows (Jackson mentions this in one of his interviews) so it will be difficult to adjust to the quick pace that TV shows pose.
I guess we will just have to wait it out and see if this develops into a certainty or if it just fizzles out.
