We have ourselves an amazing show. I know it. You know it. And now the Emmy nominations know it too. ABC’s Once Upon a Time has finally received recognition for the class and intricate details supporting the fairytale rewrites through its nomination for the ‘Outstanding Costumes for a Series – 2014’ category. Congratulations to all involved… but who stands in OUAT’s way to costume victory? And can they possibly beat the Evil Queen’s winter wardrobe?
Boardwalk Empire
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
Mad Men
No. Stylish as their suits are, how can Don Draper and co possibly compete with a fully garbed Captains Hook and Blackbeard, a mermaid, Prince Charming and cast of fairies? Is this biased? Perhaps… but it is hard not to back the famously green Wicked Witch of the West in the costume front.
The real contenders have to be Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey – both taking their audience to another place, another time through their costumes. But based on the versatility of their costume departments, are they in the same league as OUAT? Please discuss…
Eduardo Castro and Monique McRae have realised the vision of series creators Ed Kitsis and Adam Horowitz with every stitch, pleat and sequin – and, in the case of the Evil Queen herself, every sophisticated yet deadly fashion number. She may be evil, but of the style avant-garde all the same.
So in my mind, I’m sorry Jon Snow… you’re out of this match… You too Mr Carson. OUAT has gone above and beyond through clothing, props and painting people green (for that special treatment Rebecca Mader deserves an award all to herself), and deserves this recognition. The series has got its booted foot in the door at the Emmys and will be gradually rising to the heights it deserves. Until then, you four challengers – watch your awards…
Who would you like to win at the Emmys this year?
