This week saw the glorious return of Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black. The show, revolving around the tale of Piper Chapman as she navigates a brand new life inside a federal prison for women. The first season was met with critical acclaim and now the entire second series is available for us to peruse for our enjoyment. A revolutionary and evocative series, this is not one to be missed. The great opening episode concentrated on Pipers transformation from solitary confinement to await her trial. And though that episode was brilliant, everyone was wondering exactly what is happening to our inmates at Litchfield prison. In a new overview of the series, week by week, we’ll be taking you through the second series of Orange is the New Black.
The choice to enter back into Litchfield and strip the series away from Piper was a good one. After all, the series is no longer about our lead and is populated by the rounded full characters populating the prison. Fan favourite (debatable because every role here is a favourite,) Taystee needed a larger portfolio and they deliver. Her, played incredibly by Danielle Brookes is a stirring one. In season one, she wound up back in prison after failing to succeed upon release. Here, we see another layer of Taystee, effervescing intelligences and goals in order to secure a job. Her keen mathematical mind proves that intellectual people may find their way in prison and as she copes with the looming presence of her drug dealing mother figure, the doors are open for her character to waver between the lines of criminal activity and striving for to better herself. Brookes layers her character with earnest likability and earnest quality that makes you already invested in the role for the rest of the series.
Again, Orange Is The New Black steps up and shows everyone that this is how a female centred series is done. Transcending age, race, gender and sexuality, the show is innovate, striking and compelling. It’s the best show of recent years and I don’t think I can say anymore on the topic without wailing on its epicness. For now, let’s see where the corridors of Litchfield prison take us and enjoy it so happily
The entire series two of Orange Is The New Black is available on Netflix. But we're taking it week by week, join us!
