Welcome to Neverland. Where Once Upon a Time producers pull out all the stops to keep us hooked on magic and drama…
And immediately we are dropped head first into the action. Ouch my head…
Unaware of Henry’s sudden loss of manners his hero family are still pondering over his whereabouts without making much progress. In Neal’s cave they unveil etchings marking the time he spent in Neverland and his loss of hope. And how Henry will lose hope too and just become a Lost Boy. Like Father, like Son… I’m already sinking into despair about the hopelessness of it all.
But is he? Flashbacks fill in Hook’s past, pre-Milah and the crocodile days, as Liutenent Jones (Colin O’Donoghue). He is steered by a completely different set of morals, such as ‘drunkenness leads to bad form’, and faith in the King. His brother is the captain of the vessel, with orders to take the crew to Neverland. I still haven’t seen the island in the local travel agents window, but I suppose it’s only a matter of time since Neverland is growing in popularity as a holiday destination…
Still off they go, out of cannon range - the second star to the right and straight on ‘til morning!
Back to Hook’s past the sailors arrive in Neverland and the captain (Hook’s brother) introduces the mission to find a plant with magical properties. Stupidly they ask Pan (Robbie Kay) for help.
But my wariness is slightly misplaced as he surprisingly tells them the truth... Dreamshade is poison.
In a bid to prove his belief in the King and the ‘magical healing properties’ of the Dreamshade he slices his arm with the poisonous thorns. “I fight my enemies but I fight fair. Not with poison.” However the poison immediately takes effect proving beyond doubt that their King is a liar and a scheming coward. Pan arrives to the rescue unveiling a secret waterfall behind the plant which will save him. BUT MAGIC COMES AT A PRICE! It may be missing the Rumplestiltskin-style ‘dearies’ on the end but it rings true.
Captain Jones (the first) has survived for now and plans to unveil the king’s cowardice… But arriving back in the real world, he begins to re-experience the effects of the poison and dies – they didn’t pay the price for the magic, stay in Neverland forever.
If you hadn’t stolen that bean, they wouldn’t have had the chance to take Henry, we wouldn’t be on this island and I wouldn’t be dying from Dreamshade poison.
A very valid point there David.
Pan throws a spanner in the works with a deal for Hook. Passage off the island, with a plus 1 ticket for Emma if he kills Charming before the Dreamshade takes him… decisions decisions
Arriving at the mountain top and David announces he heard this conversation. Just avoiding a duel, Hook manages to use the waters of Neverland to cure him but again all magic comes at a price – don’t leave the island.
Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) comes up with the fantastic idea of trapping a Lost Boy, with vines (in abundance in the jungle…) and force him to take a message to Henry. The plan works, they offer him chocolate (which works in all first contact situations with children in most TV shows…) and offer him the chance to go home to his family. Pan’s a monster – look at what he did to your face, they cry. But he doesn’t play their game…
Pan didn’t slice my face open, Henry did.
As a last resort Regina (Lana Parrilla) rips his heart out so he has no choice BUT to help them, much to Mary Margaret’s disgust. But the boy then delivers a message and a mirror to Henry allowing the family to communicate.
By not killing David before the Dreamshade took hold he has forfeited Pan’s deal. Swigging rum in the jungle post amorous activities with Emma, Pan runs in to mock him – a one handed pirate with a drinking problem. Baelfire is alive and in Neverland… so conflicting emotions for Killian Jones.
Tune in next week to find out. They sure do know how to keep us hanging!
