The Netflix exclusive series Marvel's AKA Jessica Jones, which stars Breaking Bad's Krysten Ritter in the titular role alongside Mike Colter as Luke Cage, has received another popular cast member today! David Tennant, known more recently for his work on ITV's crime thriller Broadchurch, will be playing the role of antagonist Zebediah 'The Purple Man' Killgrave.
The Netflix exclusive series Marvel's AKA Jessica Jones, which stars Breaking Bad's Krysten Ritter in the titular role alongside Mike Colter as Luke Cage, has received another popular cast member today! David Tennant, known more recently for his work on ITV's crime thriller Broadchurch, will be playing the role of antagonist Zebediah 'The Purple Man' Killgrave.
Tennant is no stranger to playing antagonists (Barty Crouch Jr. in the Harry Potter film series), but thanks to his five-year tenure on Doctor Who it's still difficult for many to imagine him inhabiting other roles. It'll certainly be interesting to see his portrayal of Killgrave break that glass ceiling. In the Marvel comics, Killgrave's character was exposed to an experimental gas which resulted in him developing mind control abilities as well as being tanned a deep purple from head to toe, meaning that Tennant will be disguised in make-up if the producers decide to pursue a loyal approach as they have done thus far with the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Killgrave and Jones share a past, the events of which led to Jones ultimately quitting her life as a superhero. This will all be included as character back story in the new thirteen part series, which is being developed by Melissa Rosenberg whose credits as a writer include The Twilight Saga, Dexter and the O.C. The series is expect to begin filming soon as it will premier later this year, after the new Daredevil series (also exclusive to Netflix) airs. Rosenberg promises that Tennant's portrayal will make Killgrave 'a truly original villain.'

Like with Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the series is expected to incorporate many recognisable villains, and will be produced by Marvel Television as well as ABC Studios. It is just one of several new TV projects currently in the works to feature popular Marvel characters, all of which take place within the same continuity.
