Well we’ve reached the end of Arrow’s third series and have just one episode left of Flash’s first and ultimately what we have learned is that DC definitely are kings of the small screen. Both shows offer great story writing and dynamic characters in a shared universe where both casts can show up in each other’s worlds at any time. Both also have great secondary characters, so great that DC’s Legends of Tomorrow promises to bring the best of both shows and cram them into one, and as the first reveal trailer suggests it is going to be on an epic scale.
What we see is a real mixed bag in terms of personalities. Ray Palmer, Captain Cold, Heatwave and the smarter half of Firestorm, Dr. Martin Stein certainly have been popular additions to Arrow and Flash. As is Sara Lance who was awesome as… hang on… isn’t she dead? Yes, the former black, now White Canary is back through the clear use of Ra’s Al Ghul’s Lazarus Pit. Hawkgirl is also shown to be somewhat silent in the trailer but we get a clear view of her spreading her wings and keeping in touch with her comic book counterpart with what Stein identifies as a “past lives complex.”
All in all, the characters we know are the cream of the crop in terms of what has been created for Arrow and Flash, but with such varied motivations and personalities it will be interesting to see how they interact. Captain Cold rightfully points out that he is no hero, and truth be told, neither are any of the others. Dr. Stein and his partner, Ronnie Raymond fight with their combined nature of Firestorm rather than embrace it like Flash, while Sara Lance is a trained assassin who until recently was squarely in the ‘killed off’ box. It may be tough for them to get ahold of themselves and work successfully together given the villain they will have to face.
There is one other addition to the trailer, in the form of Arthur Darvill as a Time Lord. Well to be fair he’s not a Time Lord, but he is from the future. Rip Hunter is the name, which again should be a big deal for comic book fans, if a somewhat lesser known one. Hunter is a member of the Time Masters, who look over the events of time and make sure they are not being meddled with (Time Lord, like I said,) and it is he who has come to warn about Vandal Savage and bring the team together. What further part to play Hunter will have is hard to say, but with time travel already being an established ability in The Flash I am sure he will have plenty to do. Arthur Darvill is actually the clear star in the trailer itself, with all of the qualities that made him so popular in Doctor Who as Rory Williams, but with the addition of a badass looking wardrobe.
What the rest of the trailer shows us is but a quick snippet of the action promised in Legends of Tomorrow. Along with the main stars of the show it still seems evident that they will have the help of Arrow, Flash and hopefully the rest of their respective teams. The odds seems stacked against them all, and with all the characters doubting that they can make it work, but just as Rip Hunter tells them, in the future they are all known as Legends. This show may definitely be a sort of B list Justice Society, but if the showrunners approach it with the same level of writing as its predecessors I have no doubt that it’ll be fantastic!
