This week sees Jane’s life get even more complicated, an impressive feat considering she was accidentally artificially inseminated with her boss’ sperm only a few episodes ago. Now she’s having sexual fantasies about said boss, Rafael, and comes clean about them to her fiancé in front of her priest during marriage counselling in order to prepare for their upcoming marriage. It shouldn’t work, but it does.
This week sees Jane’s life get even more complicated, an impressive feat considering she was accidentally artificially inseminated with her boss’ sperm only a few episodes ago. Now she’s having sexual fantasies about said boss, Rafael, and comes clean about them to her fiancé in front of her priest during marriage counselling in order to prepare for their upcoming marriage. It shouldn’t work, but it does.
Only four episodes in and it feels like we’ve known these characters for a long, long time, which is a credit to the writers. Just because it feels like we’ve known these characters for a while though, doesn’t mean we like them all. Michael has struggled to be likable since the pilot, insisting Jane give up the baby if she wants to marry him and moving the wedding date up dramatically. Riddled with insecurities and jealousy, and stooping to the level of a crooked cop in order to ensure nothing prevents Jane giving up the baby, he’s hardly endeared himself to the audience and it’s hard to see why Jane’s even with him. That changed tonight. He’s still hard to like, but watching him grapple with his fear of raising another man’s child went some way to making him more endearing. He finally started to put Jane first. Finally.
Is it possibly too little too late? Rafael and Jane’s attraction continues to blossom, and their chemistry is electric. Their cute encounter in the pool was adorable and Michael’s poorly timed walk-by was like storm clouds on a sunny day. It was a brave move for Michael to suggest that maybe they shouldn’t get married, and it will be interesting to see which one walks away from the relationship first.
The biggest emotional moment (among many – this is inspired by a telenovela, remember) came at the end of the episode when Jane discovered her father was Rogelio, the mega-famous star of her favourite telenovela. Showing how deftly Jane the Virgin can switch from melodrama and comedy, it was a heartbreaking moment as Jane sent Xo, Alba, and Rogelio away and collapsed crying in a wedding dress. Everything’s changing for Jane and this was one straw too many. It was a stellar performance from Gina Rodriguez and showed exactly why she deserved her Golden Globe win.
