Over here in the UK things are getting a bit heated in the political world. I won’t get caught up talking about who is or isn’t racist, useless, posh or a hippy, but more emphasise what E4 are emphasising - how important it is to vote.
It is believed to be the first time any channel has closed down on polling day.
E4 reaches 8.7million 18-34 year olds a month, and is regarded one of the leading youth channels on TV. The tongue-in-cheek message is that if they can’t watch their favourite shows, they may as well pop to the polling station. However, more importantly, it will massively raise awareness of the importance of voting – and hopefully give the large proportion of non-voting youths the kick they need.
"May 7 is election day and Darren is going to turn E4 off so you might as well go and vote. You won't forget will you Darren?"
We should mention, ‘Darren’ is the character who will be manning E4 on 7th May until 7pm when the station will re-activate with Hollyoaks. He will be pictured sitting in the channel’s ‘control room.’
This is an amazing campaign, and really hammers home the important point that no matter who you back, voting is so, so important. In the last year, the amount of people who didn’t vote was more than double than the amount of people who voted Conservative (the party with the most votes).
Your vote counts.
