6/24/2014

Over the weekend, stars of your favourite television shows headed to an extravagant affair to award those who have excelled in art of the silver screen. While many award ceremonies have come and gone, this was a coveted affair that was enthusiastically received and glorious adorned your favourite shows with statuettes. The Critics Choice Awards, heralding the best in television work, was met with a wonderful response as hit shows such as Orange Is The New Black and Fargo scooped up the most awards naming them as one of the best in innovative and fresh dramas of this past year.

First of all, it was a triumphant turn for the inmates at Litchfield. The Netflix original drama, which has reached critical acclaim and was met with much furore from audiences. Following on the vein for the best work around (and trust us, if you haven’t seen it, get watching it, I personally have watched the second series twice in the past fortnight,) Orange Is The New Black scooped up three awards. Kate Mulgrew, who rose to prominence in Star Trek, was awarded Best Supporting Actress (sharing her award with the excellent Allison Janney for Mom,) in a Comedy Series. Uzo Abuda who plays everyone’s favourite Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren won for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series (and terrifically so,) while the entire show earned Best Comedy Series beating the likes of Veep, The Big Bang Theory and Silicon Valley. The stellar television series quite rightly beat the competition as it is an almost impeccable portrayal of life inside a woman’s institute that is handle with tender comedy and rounded characters.

The other big winner of the night, and to much jubilation was Fargo. Based on a film by the Cohen Brothers, this adaptation and murder mystery black comedy drama won in Best Miniseries just days after it’s finale aired. Singular awards were given to Allison Tolman as Best Supporting Actress whilst Billy Bob Thornton earned Best Actor in the Miniseries categories. Quite rightly so as Thornton’s sociopathic Malvo was the scene stealing villain who powered the series along with his immoral doings and manipulative games. They beat out the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Amanda Abington for their iconic roles in Sherlock.

Ryan Murphy’s brilliant televised movie The Normal Heart also beat Sherlock: His Last Vow and An Adventure in Time And Space to Best Movie. Matt Bomer, who played opposite Mark Ruffalo in the pivotal drama about Gay Rights and the rise of the HIV, scooped up Best Supporting Actor ina Movie or Miniseries, giving a riveting speech in his acceptance as well. Bomer beat Fargo’s Martin Freeman and Colin Hanks. Jessica Lange won Best Actress in a Movie or Mini Series for American Horror Story proving that Murphy has a wicked side when it comes movies and miniseries on television.

Matthew McConoughey added yet another award to his expansive collection by winning Best Actor in a Series for True Detective. Tatiana Maslaney showed that too many roles certainly do not spoil the broth as her clone antics helped her win Best Actress in a Series for Orphan Black. Jennifer Louis-Dreyfuss won Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Veep and Jim Parsons yet again triumphed as Sheldon Cooper for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. Aaron Paul won yet again for his performance as Jessie in Breaking Bad for Best Support Actor and Bellamy Young won Supporting Actress for Scandal.

As well as sharing the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, the sublime Allison Janney won Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series for Masters of Sex. No more words here, she is a tour de force of acting and quite rightly is paving her career with more gold than just her talent.

A wonderful affair and a variety of winners signify that we may, indeed, be in a golden age of television. All winners are listed below.
