The BBC have decided to capitalise on that popular supernatural genre: Zombies. The way they have done this, as a reality game show, is a bizarre concept. But how many of you think you could survive a zombie apocalypse, or would revel in the chance to find out? Well now you can.
There are a range of survivors, all with interesting back stories. But these survivors are ‘contestants,’ normal people who have applied to be on the show to see what they’re truly made of. They are kept in close quarters and arguments quickly start by day two as the pressure builds and the fear really sets in. Day one was clearly still a game for them, but as soon as the missions began, there was a rapid shift in atmosphere and morale.
Day one missions have included running outside and collecting food from an air drop, getting all of the survivors in the centre safely, getting the key from a corpse to open their headquarters, going to the camping store to get provisions for the night, looking at missing posters to see if anyone is looking for them, and going out to collect water.
Day two consisted of looting a shopping centre for food and leaving the safety of headquarters during the night to turn the power back on after an electrical storm. But these are not the only trials they have to face …
While we’re discussing the special effects and make up, it seems to be highly inconsistent when it comes to the extras/zombies. Some look like real corpses and will make your skin crawl to look at them. Their acting tends to be more horrific (in a good way) and will make you genuinely fear for the lives of those involved. Then there are those that look they have had a little bit of green paint put on them, red contacts and then hang around with open mouths because, you know, zombies never close their mouths do they?
The show is off to a promising start. It’s oddly engaging and will draw you in. You will fear for these people, despite knowing it’s only a game. According to the presenter of the show, Greg James, I Survived a Zombie Apocalypse is the toughest reality show on TV and leaves the contestants feeling ‘genuinely terrified.’ Would you go on this show if you had the chance? How would you fare in a zombie apocalypse?
