There is still plenty of contention over How I Met Your Mother ended. It caused uproar and left many questions unanswered and feelings left hanging. The abrupt nature of the ending lead many people to complain about it online.
With the recent release of the final season of the show on DVD and Blu-Ray, the creators have seen attempted to redress the balance somewhat, with an alternate ending; showing Ted reliving his previous girlfriends before meeting the mother at the station after Barney and Robin's wedding. The scene cuts to credits afterwards, creating a much more open ending compared to the original. It doesn't tie off all the loose plot threads, but it gives a happier ending.
Another extra scene on the DVD finally explains the pineapple from the coincidentally named "The Pineapple Incident."
Told as a flashback in the final episode, we discover that Ted stole it from the front porch of The Captain's townhouse whilst drunk. We also find out that it is supposedly a good luck tradition for sailors. The entire scene feels a little anti-climactic after the way many people seem to have built up the legend in their heads, but (once again) it gives some closure.
