Homeland Finale "The Star" (Spoilers!)

Well here we are folks. The end of Season 3. It’s been a bit up and down, but I will not waste any time in this review moaning, not until later on at least. Because right now, I have nothing but good things to say about this majestic finale. Let’s get on with it.

Picture
After killing Akbari, Brody calls Carrie and hides the body. He holds Akbari’s driver at gunpoint and gets out of there, before meeting up with Carrie and driving off. Javadi calls Saul, suggesting that they abandon the pair, as the capture of Brody would increase Javadi’s chance of getting a higher rank, and therefore make him a more powerful asset. Saul refuses, organising an extraction plan. However, Dar Adal betrays him and informs Lockhart, who gets the president involved. At his decision, Lockhart gives Javadi the location of the safe house.

At the safe house, Carrie and Brody ponder what happens next when they get home. She informs him of her pregnancy, and we find out that the baby is indeed Brody’s. Later that night, they hear a helicopter. Believing it to be their extraction team, they go outside, only to be ambushed by Iranian military forces, who take Brody, but leave Carrie behind. Meeting with Javadi the next day, he tells her that Brody has gone on trial, and has been sentenced to death. Carrie has one last conversation with him via phone, but the time comes later that night when Brody is to be hanged. He is lifted into the air in front of the entirety of Tehran, and he shares a look with Carrie as he asphyxiates and slowly dies.

If that had been the last ever episode of Homeland, I would’ve been so happy. Why? Because it was perfect. Absolutely perfect. Fair enough, perhaps it needed a bit more Quinn, but otherwise there is no reason to dislike it. If anything, it just gives more reason why Season 4 is a hugely bad idea. This season, everything has been tied up. There were no cliffhangers left. No one got bombed or underwent shock therapy, there was nothing here to get us geared for more. And that’s why this was the perfect last episode. Let’s just take a look at the characters now: Carrie has a job in Istanbul, a prestigious job of which she is the youngest person to ever hold, and a baby on the way. Brody is dead, but died a hero. Even though we haven’t seen them for like 5 episodes, Jessica and Chris have moved on from everything and Dana has left home and is stable. They’ve said their goodbyes and they’re done. Quinn has left the CIA, Saul is moving to New York with Mira, and Senator Lockhart is in charge of the CIA whilst it’s at its peak. There is no room for improvement; everyone is in a good place and everything has been tied up.

Carrie scrawls on a star, a star that no one will recognise except for her, and it was a beautiful tribute to the character. That moment right there gives you that gut feeling where you think “This is the end”.

And that’s it folks. I’ll see you again next year for Season 4, but until then, have a fantastic Christmas and a happy new year! Make sure you have fun with your families and drink well all night, but always remember Nicholas Brody as the hero he was, rather than for the mistakes he made.
