Yes, the new series of the BBC Three comedy hit our screens last Thursday, after a very popular first series, so expect more awkward beliefs and gullibility from the wacky protagonist, and more hilarious anger and annoyance from Greg Davies as his disapproving Father in Law. However Cuckoo has undergone some serious Hollywood style surgery.
The new series comes with some major changes. The most notable, obvious and advertised change is the introduction of part time werewolf and muscle hunk Taylor Lautner replacing Andy Samberg. Lautner plays the part of Dale, Cuckoo’s son who has come to the UK looking for his father, and quickly runs into his father’s bereaved family.
With a forty percent change in the main cast the dynamic of Cuckoo’s return has changed somewhat from the first series. Lautner will surely pull in a huge and new audience for the show but in the first episode his delivery lacks the charisma and likeability of Samberg, and their lines are very similar, so it is noticeable. The general writing however remains of a similar standard, with much more laughs coming from the supporting cast than in the first series.
Although the first episode, and particularly Lautner’s performance was not of the standard of the first series, I for one believe the second episode and the rest of the series are well worth a watch.
