Game of Thrones is a phenomenon. Based on the book series of the same name by George R.R Martin, this now global hit television series. Filled with epic amounts of blood bath, strong characters both female and not and taking human interest stories, setting them slap bang in a medieval world. With series one and two largely well received and an ever expanding film base, season three comes storming to DVD and Blu-Ray but what can you expect from this outstanding HBO show?
Which is probably the best way to describe this series, everything you know and love completely intensifies. There is much more turning and toiling through the battlefields. And the cast here are all accomplished actors from the young Maisie Williams as Arya Stark to Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister, everyone has solidified their roles and more so, treading the trepidous seas of the show. And bravo to the special effects, sets and costume for truly translating Martin’s famous series into live action and breathing life into the land of Westeros. It looks incredible and even if the story line gets tedious after a while, it is also handy to have sweeping shots of a world that was once confined to pages.
However, for fans of this boxset is full of special features to get your bloodlust juices flowing. There are ten hours’ worth of commentaries, a chance to explore the Kingdom of Westeros, deleted scenes and for those purchasing on Blu-Ray, there is an outstanding featurette of behind the scenes footage of The Rains of Castamere and a sneaky look at what’s to come with the hotly anticipated season four.
This box set and series isn’t going to win any new fans over to the franchise because it smatters of the same. There is also too much tedium as too much of the same. That being said, it will certainly appease the ones already there. With the intelligent minds of Dan Weiss and David Benioff pulling the reigns, this amazing collection will tide you over until April when a new stream of the wars of Westeros will come your way.
