On a fateful day in November 2013, a beloved character from Family Guy passed away in a somewhat disturbing scene and left the Griffin family temporarily distraught. Stewie was the last character to come to terms with the death of his best friend and to be able to accept the new family dog: Vinnie. Since then, Vinnie has taken over Brian’s role in the series with a mobster attitude to life. This has been quite refreshing and humorous at times but nothing can fill the gap that Brian has left in our hearts. Or can it?

Since then, Vinnie has taken over Brian’s role in the series with a mobster attitude to life. This has been quite refreshing and humorous at times but nothing can fill the gap that Brian has left in our hearts. Or can it?
It has been rumoured that the deceased, Brian Griffin, will be making a return to the show for the December fifteenth episode. I can imagine many of you grinning at this news and throwing your arms in the air with joy as I first did when I heard this news. I apologise for being a sceptic but I’m not convinced.
I don’t doubt that Brian will return, but I am concerned about the form it will take and how long he will be back with us. Brian has been removed from the opening credits and replaced with Vinnie. They can’t kill off a major character, replace him, and then bring him back. The tension between the two dogs would be an enticing aspect of the show if this were to happen. Personally, I think this will be a one – off thing. One theory I have heard is that Brian could take on the form of ‘The Ghost of Christmas Past’ from Charles Dickens’ famous ‘A Christmas Carol’. Others think it could be a dream sequence. Others still think it could be in a flashback. Perhaps Stewie managed to repair his annihilated time machine?

More than anything, I want Brian back. I miss his intelligence and charm. Unfortunately, I now feel that this would ruin the show. A large amount of fans still haven’t warmed to Vinnie but I don’t think he’s that bad. I can see how he could take the show in a new direction and be a big part in some of the story arcs. He could become the Roger of American Dad. Plus, Stewie’s relationship with the new family pet has been beautiful. I sincerely doubt Brian’s return will be permanent but we can hope. Whatever happens, we can be sure that the Family Guy team have achieved what they set out to do. This has given them a lot of publicity and everyone is talking about this, so congratulations to them. You’ve ripped out our hearts and are giving us false hope (possibly). Your staff really know how to write a great show and how to raise your ratings!
