There are just some shows that you immediately associate with a certain actor. Some people think of Star Trek and they think of William Shatner. Some people think of Only Fools and Horses and think of David Jason. And some people think of Doctor Who, and despite having eleven different faces to think of, they think of Tom Baker.
Whilst it wasn’t uncommon in the Eccleston/Tennant/Smith era for the Doctor to get close and affectionate towards his companions, it was certainly a factor in the Fourth Doctor’s tenure too. Although whilst in the revival it’s more romantic, the Fourth Doctor was protective and more of a father figure to his companions, especially Sarah Jane. He was the first Doctor to refer to his companions as his best friends, showing he had a much closer bond with them than any previous incarnation.
For a lot of people who watched Who in the 70s, Tom Baker was THE Doctor, and even fans of the revival have gone back to the classics and found a love for him. If you’ve never seen the Fourth Doctor in action, he’s got seven years worth of stories for you to check out, and you will not regret it.
