Constantine is rapidly becoming one of life’s mysteries. Is it bad? Is it good? It’s almost impossible to tell. Ultimately, it seems there are many shows out there which are worse, but it’s hard to say why.
This week a demonic record is going around, killing anyone who listens to it. Unsurprisingly, the entire episode revolves around rock and roll, with references to Constantine’s past as a musician. Sadly, there was no music video or version of the song played. But we can’t have everything.
Zed’s power of to see visions could easily become the deus ex machina for the series. It’s a useful power to show off at the beginning of the episode, helping the protagonists know what to look out for in a cryptic enough way that enough mystery is kept for the rest of the show, but when it becomes the clue to disrupting the “Evil of the Week’s” plans it starts becoming more of a crutch for a lazy writer. Hopefully next week will see a shaking up of the formula, letting some of the more interesting aspects of the show shine through.
The series is showing a steady improvement in episode quality. However, it’s far from the show it has set itself up to be. With any luck, the series will be getting into the swing of things right around the time it reaches the finale.
