After a lacklustre start last week, Constantine manages to turn it around this week to create a more energetic and interesting episode, giving hints at grander schemes to come.
Part of the problem with last week’s episode was the lack of characters who were slated to appear regularly throughout the rest of the series. Those who weren’t due to return were given the short end of the stick for character development, whilst the others were given the bare minimum to keep you rooting for them. Luckily this has been improved upon immensely this episode, the recurring characters are given a nice solid base, with a dash of mystery to their pasts to keep the audience intrigued, and the one-off characters (around just for the episode) are given enough characterisation to be two dimensional, at the very least.
The episode itself is much more interesting than the Pilot. There was more focus on the whys of performing sorcery and less on the demonic aspects. The climax was a little underwhelming, with the main villain being a minor character who had only appeared in two scenes prior to the final confrontation, but it was an enjoyable romp through the story with plenty of action and exposition to keep things flowing.
Constantine has managed to pick up the slack dropped by the pilot episode and forge ahead with a new fire. The lacklustre plot and acting has been given new life and a stronger premise. Here’s hoping it continues.
