Breaking Bad - "Granite Slate" Review (Spoilers!)

9/28/2013

By Robbie Jones

You know what? I’m too depressed to even come up with a witty introduction. In less than a week, this is all over. What possible reason do I have to be happy? Still, this week’s episode was fantastic as usual, so I guess that’s something to smile about.

So we finally meet Saul’s mystery extractor (Played by Robert Forster of Jackie Brown fame). As Saul prepares to get the new life treatment, he discovers it’ll be a few days before he can get anywhere, so he’s left to bunk with Walter, who is also on the waiting list. Walt asks him to get him contact with hit men so that he can kill Jack, Todd and the Nazis, but Saul refuses. He then suggests Walt turns himself in, that way, Skyler can keep the house, but he won’t have it. He won’t give himself in until his entire $80 million fortune is given to his family. Ed then takes Saul off to Nebraska, with a new identity, and we say goodbye to one of BrBa’s most memorable characters.

Meanwhile, Jack and his men have raided Marie’s house and sit down to watch Jesse’s confession tape (Also finding out that Todd killed Drew Sharp). The men wish to kill Jesse, but Todd convinces them to keep him so that they can cook, and that he can talk to Lydia more. Meeting with him in public, Lydia states that she wishes to take a break, though her mind changes quickly when Todd reveals that the Meth is now at 92% purity. Todd and the boys then visit Skyler, warning her to keep quiet about Lydia, whom she could recognise due to her visit to the car wash. Down in his cell, Jesse manages to unlock his cuffs with a paperclip and soon escapes, but is eventually caught. They tie him up and take him to Andrea’s house, where he is made to watch as Todd puts a bullet in her head. Brock is next if he tries it again.

Ed takes Walter to his new home, a wood cabin in New Hampshire.  He is warned that leaving could potentially be dangerous for him, and as he attempts to leave on the first day, can’t bring himself to do it. Next time we see him, time has passed, and he now has a full head of hair and a beard. Ed comes over with some boxes, supplies, newspapers and treatment for the cancer. However, he also brings some news. The White house is now a tourist attraction; fenced off and vandalized inside. Skyler and the kids have moved to a new home, and she now uses her maiden name (Whilst Walt Jr. still insists on being called Flynn). A lonely Walt then pays him to stay an hour longer and play cards. Waking up in the middle of the night, Walt gets the idea to stuff $100,000 in a box and send it to Walt Jr. He visits the local bar and calls Jr., who believes it’s Aunt Marie calling him. He rejects the money and has an outburst, claiming that he killed Hank, and once again utters that famous line from Season 1: “Why don’t you just die already?”

Heartbroken, Walt calls the D.E.A and leaves the phone hanging, preparing for arrest. Sitting down at the bar, he looks at the TV and sees Elliot and Gretchen Schwartz. They talk of their new plan to build help centres for those with drug problems. Of course, they are asked about their affiliation with Walt, as well as learning that Heisenberg blue is still on the market. Elliot explains that all he ever did was think of the name and never contributed anything more to the company, and when asked if they think Walter White is still out there, Gretchen says no. She does however think Heisenberg is. Clearly enraged by this, Walt leaves the bar as police turn up.

Wow....What an episode. So much to talk about! First off, let me just say that Saul’s last scene really showed Bob Odenkirk’s true acting ability and proves he’s more than just comic relief. Seeing Robert Forster in the episode was a treat too; he’s great to watch.
Picture
But once again, we’re left with absolutely no idea how any of this could pan out. What will Walt do next? A lot of people reckon he’s out to get Gretchen and Elliot, but I really don’t think that’s the case. I think he’s out to find whoever is making the Meth and put a stop to it. As much as I dislike her, Gretchen was right; Walter White is dead. In that very last scene, just before he disappears, half of Walt’s face is covered by shadow. There is no more Walter White....There is only Heisenberg.

Oh man, Jesse...I love that guy. I mean, he’s literally my favourite TV character of all time. And I have spent the last season hoping he gets a happy ending. I wanted him and Walt to make up, and then part ways, so that he can live happily ever after with Andrea, Brock, Badger and Skinny Pete (Though not in the same house, I hope). But now....Man, I hate to say it, but I actually hope Jesse Pinkman dies. Think of all the shit he’s gone through in the course of the show; he’s hit rock bottom many times, his girlfriend died right next to him, he was beaten to a pulp by Hank, betrayed by his cooking partner and friend, and finally, just had to watch the love of his life die (At the hands of someone he truly hated, don’t forget). He’s been through so much that I really just wanna put him out of his misery. And poor Brock! Honestly, I nearly cry at the thought alone.

Picture
But death isn’t the only thing I want for Jesse. Let’s be honest; we all have our fantasies about this show. I like to think Heisenberg, having retrieved the Risin and the gun from the car, goes to find Jack and the Nazis and saves Jesse. Agreeing on a truce, they team up to stop them. Jesse gets into a fight with Todd, whilst Walt faces off with Jack as his men threaten Skyler and the kids. I couldn’t bear to see Jesse go without brutally killing Todd, and finally getting his revenge. I want Walter White to come out on top. I want Jesse to walk away from the fight alive, and spend his life raising Brock. I want Walter to kill Jack and the Nazis, and say one last goodbye to Skyler and the kids as the police turn up, and the show ends with him making his escape, almost like the ending of The Dark Knight.

Maybe my thinking is a bit too wishful; the chances of the scenario are very small. But hey....A boy can dream.

One episode left, people. Just one.
