There’s only one episode left of Better Call Saul, and whilst that’s not as sad a statement as it should be, we could be looking at an excellent finale following this week’s heartbreaking penultimate episode.

First things first, let’s talk about Mike. It’s really great to see him slowly become the badass he is in Breaking Bad, and this week was perhaps his best yet as he shows up two colleagues in a parking lot without a weapon. Mike has this silent warrior feel about him; you don’t know much about him (Well we do, but the characters don’t) and you don’t know what he stands for, but you know that he’s skilled and he’s scary, and should be avoided. In this episode, he acted as protection for a first time drug dealer. The scene doesn’t quite go as you might want it to, as for a second it seems that maybe Mike may have to do a bit of arse-kicking when the deal goes wrong for a second. But we already know Nacho, and we know he’s working outside of Tuco’s knowledge, so like Mike explains, he can’t risk a bad deal. So a little bit disappointing that the scene isn’t as awesome as it could be, it’s immediately made up for in the following scene where Mike explains how Price is a criminal and the commitment he’s made to the drug trade. The writing for this moment is completely on point; it’s engrossing, even more so from the mouth of Jonathan Banks, and is a nice example of Mike’s wisdom.
In fact, the writing for the entire episode was immaculate; hands down one of the best written episodes to date, and it’s starting to feel more and more like Breaking Bad in its dialogue. This week saw a heartbreaking betrayal, as Jimmy and Chuck take their case to HHM, only for Jimmy to be told by Howard he’s not allowed to work on it. The ensuing argument reveals that he doesn’t think Jimmy is a real lawyer. The dialogue is completely brutal; you can practically feel every single word pierce Jimmy like a knife. It’s almost agonising to listen to, especially considering how close these two seemed, and how supportive Chuck was of his brother. So that leaves one question that several viewers have already began speculating: Is this betrayal a pivotal moment in the transformation of Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman? Jimmy has been trying to be an honest lawyer this entire season and give up the dodgy persona he used to have, but now he’s been told by his brother, his role model and his most trusted friend that he isn’t a real lawyer, and he’s still the same person he was before. Will Jimmy conform to this stereotype and become sleazy Saul or is there more to come? It seems almost too early for Saul Goodman to be rearing his ugly head, but at the same time, another season of Jimmy trying to change could be a bit boring.
It’s a shame this case storyline had to end so quickly, as it would have been nice to end the season on a high, with Jimmy being the victor in court. Still, at least we have one last episode of (hopefully) exceptional character development. Now we just have to wait and see how it all ends.
